Warm-Up – CHOOSE ONE Journal: What will the world be like in 2081? Include at least 6 specific predictions. Things to consider: human rights, laws, equality, environment, economy, technology, health, gender, race, population, etc. OR Journal: A “handicap” is a “condition that markedly restricts a person's ability to function physically, mentally, or socially? If you had a handicap that took away your greatest strength, what would it be? What would your life be like? Include a) what the handicap would be/take away from you, b) what your life would be like, and c) how you would feel about this.

Characterization DIRECT CHARACTERIZATION - the writer makes direct statements about a character's personality and tells what the character is like. EXAMPLE: Janae owned a multitude of outfits and accessories, and it always took her forever to decide which combination might impress Trent. As usual, she called her sister several times for advice. After doing so, Janae decided to give the navy blue dress with the white sweater a try.

Characterization INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION - the writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him. EXAMPLE: Janae held up six different outfits in front of the mirror and pondered which would go best with her navy blue shoes, makeup, and earrings. After ninety minutes of mixing and matching, and texting her sister three times for advice, Janae finally made up her mind. She’d give the navy blue dress and white sweater a try, hoping Trent would love it.

Oppression and Suppression OPPRESS: Usually applies to mistreatment of PEOPLE. 1. To keep down by severe and unjust use of force or authority. 2. To dominate harshly or cruelly. SUPPRESS: Usually applies to INFORMATION. To put an end to. To inhibit. To keep from being revealed.
