Vocabulary Autotrophs Producers Heterotrophs Consumers -herbivores -carnivores -omnivores -scavengers

Decomposers Detritivores An organism that feeds on and breaks down dead plant or animal matter, returning essential nutrients to the ecosystem.

Autotrophs & Heterotrophs Produce their own food through photosythesis. Heterotrophs- Receive their energy from consuming others. FUNGI

3rd Consumer (Tertiary) 2nd Consumer (Secondary) What is a food chain? 3rd Consumer (Tertiary) Tertiary Consumer – Carnivores which eat other carnivores. The order that animals feed on other plants and animals is called a food chain. Secondary Consumer – Carnivores that eat herbivores. 2nd Consumer (Secondary) “I do” – Help students understand that a food chain usually begins with a green plant or algae (producer) which is eaten by an animal (consumer). The arrow means 'is eaten by', and shows the flow of energy along the food chain. Explain the connection between food chains and food webs. Introduce the different trophic levels. “We do” – The food chain image is linked to a website where students can be guided to build a sample food chain. Primary Consumer – Herbivores that eat plants. 1st Consumer (Primary) Producer – Plants, algae, or bacteria that produce their own food by photosynthesis. Producer

Trophic Levels Food web- shows all possible feeding relationships in a community at each trophic level Tertiary 3rd Consumer Energy Pyramid Secondary 2nd Consumer Primary 1st Consumer Producer
