Why study History? Lesson Aim: discuss what types of skills and jobs you could get with a qualification in History.

My path to being a teacher…

Why study History in terms of careers? “History is one of the most versatile degrees you can take. It demands painstaking research and eloquent arguments. It'll ask you to analyse and debate, consider and compose, and to tackle some of the broadest, most controversial topics humans have dealt with. it's good training, good enough for almost anything.”

What skills can History give me? Other than learning about the world in which we live and how it has been shaped the way it has, History can offer you a large number of skills that transfer into a number of jobs… Research

Analysis issues and events Argument Questioning information

Investigating and assessing

Reaching your own conclusion/interpretation

Organisation

What jobs can these skills get you? “A significant number of historians enter the legal profession, where their analytical and critical reasoning skills are highly valued, as a well as library, information and archivist careers. Many go on to carry out researching roles in industry and management firms, where their research expertise and ability to select, manage and organise information comes to the fore” - Margaret Holbrough – Graduate Careers advisor. At first glance, it might seem as though people who have qualifications in History can only do jobs like teaching and museum curators. But this is not true – there are a number of jobs you could do…
