Presentation transcript:

Gender Issues/Roles What does it mean to be a female? What does it mean to be a male? What if someone doesn’t identify with what they are born as? Where do we learn our gender roles? What happens if we do not fit into those stereotypical “boxes”????

Where do we get our beliefs about what it’s like to be male/female? Our parents Our friends The media Social media Watching others The toys we are given Our environment Our own past experiences History (It’s always been like this)

What are some stereotypes for females?

Women stereotypes…. Pink Get nails done Talk on the phone a lot Barbies They cook and clean They are nurturing They like make up and dressing up and pink They like to shop They aren’t good at driving They are sensitive, emotional, cry a lot Moms, nurses, teachers are ladies jobs.

What stereotypes do we have for the guys?

Men are….... Strong, Tough, rough Businesslike-CEO’s Construction workers Athletic Don’t cry Not sensitive Like sports and beer Are lazy and don’t help out with the kids Aren’t nurturing to kids Like to grill and talk sports

When has someone you’ve known stepped out of the stereotypical female/male box? Here are Mrs.BH’s Examples: My tough army ex husband cooking/laundry Thomas Greaney-Football, Basketball, Great with kids My son and his backpack My kids and their toys Boys are our school who do gymnastics Girls at our school who play hockey My first year teaching a girl was on the football team here

Commercials that feed into stereotypes Or Don’t….. https://youtu.be/JQVk5YgWKHg https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?fr=yhs- iba-syn&hsimp=yhs- syn&hspart=iba&p=tide+commercial+with+dad#id =4&vid=c1347c346c1fd800c527792b42c737fe&acti on=view What other commercials have you seen that either feed into gender role stereotypes or go against them

Scenarios…. Rick wants to ask Helen out on a date. He thinks that she should split the movie and dinner cost with him? Rhonda wants to ask Steve out. She thinks Steve likes her and that he is too shy to ask her. What should she do? Craig is at a college party and a beautiful Chick approaches him and asks if he wants to go back to her place. He doesn’t even know this woman and doesn’t think he is ready to take things to that level. Stella and her husband are about to have a baby! Her husband wants her to stay at home until the kid is in Kindergarten to save money and she wants to get back to work as soon as she can.

Trans and sexual orientation what’s the diff?…. Transgender is a term used to describe people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were born as. Gender identity is a person's internal, personal sense of being a man or a woman. For transgender people, the sex they were assigned at birth and their own internal gender identity do not match. Sexual orientation describes who the person is attracted to. For example: straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, Gender identity describes a person's, internal, personal sense of being a man or a woman (or someone outside of that gender binary). Simply put: sexual orientation is about who you are attracted to and fall in love with; gender identity is about your own sense of yourself. Transgender people may be straight, lesbian, gay, or bisexual.
