Bellringer Date: 10/10 – 10/11 Topic: Natural Selection Learning Target: Describe the conditions required for natural selection.
Unit 2 : Evolution Test Day!! Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 What are some beliefs for how life on Earth first started? What is some evidence that tells us organisms evolved over time? How does this apply to us Humans? Hominid Evolution What is Natural Selection N.Selection Modeling and practicing scenarios How mutation and genetic recombination increase genetic variation? Test: Review Packet HW Test Day!!
Agenda Bellringer (5min) Introduction (5min) Input Notes (20min) Output Notes (10min) We DO (25min) Independent Practice (15min) Exit Ticket (10min)
Learning Goals 1. Describe the 4 steps of Natural Selection, giving an example of each. 2. Explain the importance of "Variation". 3. Does Natural Selection act on an organism phenotype or genotype?
Input Notes Copy what is in RED
“It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change.” Charles Darwin
Natural Selection Observation 1: Organisms generally have more offspring than can survive to adulthood. Observation 2: Offspring are not identical. There is variation in their appearance, size, and other characteristics.
Natural Selection Survival of the “fittest.” Survive and Reproduce Inference: Those organisms that are better adapted to their environment have a greater likelihood of surviving to adulthood and passing these characteristics on to their offspring. Survival of the “fittest.” Survive and Reproduce
Natural Selection There are 3 requirements for natural selection to occur. Observe the scenarios that will be given to you and discuss: which requirement for natural selection do you see?
Think and Talk (4min) Irvin, summarize what happened to Nemo’s “siblings” Jackie, predict what would happen if there were only 10 eggs instead of +400 Abby, can you combine Irvin and Jackie statements to state the benefit of having a lot of offsprings? Tia, can you either support or challenge what Abby said? Haydee, what is a name for the action of: “making more than what you need”
(1 min) 1. Overproduction Organisms produce more offspring than needed, not all offspring will survive Offspring will compete for resources
Event 1:
Event 2:
Event 3:
Think and Talk (4min) Rashonda, link the 3 scenarios and summarize what you saw happening in them. Irvin, can you unpack what Rashonda said? Tia, predict why the short neck giraffe died and the long neck giraffe survived. Jackie, what is another term for “differences”?
(1 min) 2. Variation Each individual has an unique combination of inherited traits. Adaptation: an inherited trait that increases an organism’s chances of survival
How Could you correct this student’s statement with the information you just learned about Variation? “The reason giraffes have a long neck today is because they adapted to the environment by stretching their necks until they could reach their food.” “Long necks are a variation that some giraffes, which were lucky enough to be born with/inherit it, had. This variation allowed them to reach their food and survive, therefore, giraffes with long necks passed the long neck trait off to their offspring. Overtime the population changed until only long neck giraffes were present and all the short neck giraffes had died before reproducing.”
Michael, which community has a better chance of surviving a natural disaster? Variation is important because if everyone is the same, they are all vulnerable to the same environmental changes or diseases Community A Community B
Ja’carrien, according to the picture, predict which male antelope is the most fit. Katchina, can you support or challenge what Ja’carrien said? Lawyana, combining what Ja’carrien and Katchina said, what can you infer about Natural Selection in this picture? Keython, what would you call the action of two individuals trying to acquire the same resource?
3. Competition (1 min) Individuals COMPETE for limited resources: Food, water, space, mates Natural selection occurs through “Survival of the fittest” Fitness: the ability to survive and reproduce Not all individuals survive to adulthood
Two moths are trying to survive in the same environment: Sade, which moth you predict the bird will catch? Unpack your answer. Tadza, can you build and support Sade’s answer mentioning why the bird would pick such moth? B
4. Differential Selective Success (1 min) 4. Differential Selective Success The individuals with the best adaptations will survive and have the opportunity to pass on it’s traits to offspring. Natural selection acts on the phenotype (physical appearance), not the genotype (genetic makeup) Ex: When a predator finds its prey, it is due to the prey’s physical characteristics, like color or slow speed, not the chromosomes
Overview: Overproduction + Variation + Competition = Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection occurs in four steps: Overproduction + Variation + Competition = Differential Selective Success
Natural Selection Individuals with traits that are not well suited to their environment either die or leave few offspring. Evolution occurs when good traits build up in a population over many generations and bad traits are eliminated by the death of the individuals.
Notebook Output: Darwin’s Finches How and why did these finches ended up with different types of beak? (Just as we described a reason for the giraffe’s long neck, write one about the finches beaks) Suggested vocab words: variation, competition, trait, most fit, natural selection, survival.
