Natural Selection Observation 1: Organisms generally have more offspring than can survive to adulthood. Observation 2: Offspring are not identical. There is variation in their appearance, size, and other characteristics.

How Could you correct this student’s statement with the information you just learned about Variation? “The reason giraffes have a long neck today is because they adapted to the environment by stretching their necks until they could reach their food.” “Long necks are a variation that some giraffes, which were lucky enough to be born with/inherit it, had. This variation allowed them to reach their food and survive, therefore, giraffes with long necks passed the long neck trait off to their offspring. Overtime the population changed until only long neck giraffes were present and all the short neck giraffes had died before reproducing.”

4. Differential Selective Success (1 min) 4. Differential Selective Success The individuals with the best adaptations will survive and have the opportunity to pass on it’s traits to offspring. Natural selection acts on the phenotype (physical appearance), not the genotype (genetic makeup) Ex: When a predator finds its prey, it is due to the prey’s physical characteristics, like color or slow speed, not the chromosomes

Overview: Overproduction + Variation + Competition = Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection occurs in four steps: Overproduction + Variation + Competition = Differential Selective Success

Natural Selection Individuals with traits that are not well suited to their environment either die or leave few offspring. Evolution occurs when good traits build up in a population over many generations and bad traits are eliminated by the death of the individuals.
