English literature 5-a-day 1 Finish this quotation “in fire , blood and anguish” 2 Scrooge regretted not giving money to a Christmas Caroller who came to his workplace that evening. 3 Lord Capulet is being aggressive when he says “my fingers itch” because he is showing that he wants to hit or attack his daughter for her disobedience. It illustrates that he is using violence as a tool to discipline his daughter. 4 Hyperbolic language is exaggerative language such as “prettiest babe” 5 Can you use the images to give a key quotation from the final scene in R+J? “I will joint by joint” tear thee

C/L Wednesday 22nd November 2017 R+J Paper 1 Approaching the Exam LESSON OBJECTIVE: To understand how to successfully approach the essay question. LESSON OUTCOME: To produce an essay style response that is thoughtful and detailed.

Reminder for next week’s mock English Literature Paper One: Romeo and Juliet essay + A Christmas Carol essay

Approaching the question Checklist Be calm and read the question twice. Then highlight what the question is asking you to do. Find the quotations from the extract that you want to analyse and annotate some ideas. Then make a quick plan of 3 other quotations/ideas in the play that you want to link the extract to so that you develop your thoughts.

Think, pair, share What should you consider if the question is male aggression/masculinity/conflict? Is it just about fighting? Is it just about men? What about stereotypes?

Male aggression some key scenes and acts Lads, Lads, Lads! Act 2 Scene 4 Act 1 Scene 1- Gregory and Sampson vs Abraham and Balthasar then it leads to Tybalt and Benvolio plus citizens fighting. Lots of sexual references and conflict. Act 2 Scene 4- Benvolio, Mercutio and Romeo are out on the streets discussing how Tybalt has threatened Romeo to a duel. Mercutio compliments Tybalt’s duelling skills. Then the Nurse arrives “bawdy hand” (Mercutio) “my pump is well flowered” (Romeo) saying the Nurse should hide her face with a fan. Act 3 Scene 1- the fight scene Mercutio and Tybalt’s death. Act 3 Scene 5- Lord Capulet’s aggression with Juliet “I will drag thee on a hurdle” and “my finger’s itch” Act 4 Scene 3- Juliet drinks the potion but explores the idea of bashing in her own skull with bones of her ancestors if she wakes up early in the tomb.

Let’s have a go! Remember: Remember it is 50 minutes in the exam so we are doing a mini-version today. Let’s have a go! Remember: 2-3 ideas about each quotation so you show THOUGHTFUL detail! Zoom in on key words/phrases/punctuation Keep mentioning what SHAKESPEARE is trying to achieve. Show off knowledge about the Elizabethan Era and what is being represented. Keep developing your ideas (lots about one quotation)! Also it suggests… Furthermore this reveals that… Moreover the particular word “_____” highlights… Even more importantly, this quotation is showing that… Do not forget me Try this sentence to weave me in Shakespeare’s message here is that…

So you don’t do this in the exam, write down one revision tip ready to share with the class!
