List of Experiments Exp. No Name of the Experiment 08 Measurement of phase sequence of a three-phase system 09 Measurement of three phase power using two wattmeter method 10 Determination and correction of power factor of an ac system

Exp. No: 01 Exp. Name: Familiarization with some electric meters and circuit equipment. Circuit: A close conducting path through which an electric current either flows or intended to flow Electrical Parameters: The various elements of an electric circuit are called its parameter, like resistor, inductor, capacitor, voltage source, current source etc. Active Elements: Voltage source, Current source Passive Elements: Resistors, Inductors, Capacitors

Active Elements Voltage Source: A voltage source is a two terminal device which can maintain a fixed voltage. Current Source: A current source is an electronic circuit that delivers or absorbs an electric current which is independent of the voltage across it. i.e. which can deliver a constant current.

Passive Elements Resistor: Ex: Incandescent Bulb, Variable Resistor Rating: Resistance, Tolerance, Power ratings Symbol: Resistor Variable resistor (Rheostat)

Passive Elements Inductor: Ex: Ballast or Choke Rating: Inductance, Current ratings Symbol:

Passive Elements Capacitor: Ex: Capacitor bank Rating: Capacitance, Voltage ratings Symbol: Capacitor Variable Capacitor

Electric Meter Different Electrical Meters for Measurement Purpose: Galvanometers Ammeters Voltmeters AVO meter (Commercially called Multimeter) Wattmeter

Ammeter A current measuring instrument Measures the amount of current flow through the circuit Ammeter is a low resistance device Ammeter is always connected in series with the branch whose current is to be measured

Connection Diagram of Ammeter

Ammeter Two types _ DC Ammeter _ AC Ammeter A DC ammeter is polarity marked with +Ve and –Ve sign The +Ve polarity of DC ammeter have to be connected to the current entering side of the circuit

This mark of straight line indicate DC ammeter Range Extension

This mark of straight line indicate AC ammeter Range Extension

Voltmeter have to be always connected across the load To measure electrical potential difference between two points in an electric circuit Voltmeter is a high resistance device Voltmeter have to be always connected across the load

Connection Diagram of voltmeter

Voltmeter Two types _ DC Voltmeter _ AC Voltmeter In a DC voltmeter the terminals are provided with polarity marking (+Ve and –Ve) To use DC voltmeter precaution should be taken about the polarity marking In an AC voltmeter there is no such polarity marking

This mark of straight line indicate DC voltmeter Range Extension

This mark of straight line indicate AC voltmeter

Multimeter It is also known as Electronic VOM or AVO meter Used to measure current, voltage and resistance both for AC and DC quantity, for a number of ranges Some multimeter provide the facilities of measuring inductance, capacitance, temperature Two type _ Analog AVO meter _ Digital AVO meter

Multimeter Analog Multimeter Digital Multimeter

Wattmeter To measure electric power in a circuit Wattmeter is generally four terminal device Two terminal are the end points of potential coil (P.C.) and the other two are current coil (C.C.)

Wattmeter Basic Wattmeter connection
