How stable was the Weimar republic from 1924-1929? Learning Outcome: To make a judgement how stable Germany was both economically and politically.

Starter Read through stressemann’s policies and Impact sheet and add any additional things that Stressemann did to restore stability in Germany Event Description How did it improve the situation in Germany? The Rentenmark is established, November 1923 This was a temporary currency that was issued in limited numbers and not based on your gold reserve. This was important because the German people were confident with the new currency. It restored the value of the currency, reduced inflation and stabilised German finances. 1925 Locarno treaties: P.26 1926: Germany enter the league of nations: P.26 1924 Dawes Plan: P.27 1929 Young Plan: P.27 Please also state a negative for the young plan.

Political recovery? The period saw more stable government. The basic problems of the Constitution remained with no One party securing a majority in the Reichstag and there were frequent, Short-lived coalition governments. Extremist parties such as the Nazis and communists Were determined to overthrow the Weimar republic Hindenburg was a popular First world war leader, who was elected president in 1925. Stressemann was a popular leader with many Germans. Hindenburg who was elected President in 1925 disliked the new republic. There was a little support for extremist parties e.g Nazis won only 12 seats in The 1928 elections. Many nationalists opposed the Dawes and Young plans

Economic recovery? The German recovery was too dependent on US loans. This was to prove disastrous after the Wall street crash. Industrial recovery brought more Employment. The new Rentenmark stabilised the German currency In nearly every town new Factories and public facilities Sprang up. US loans encouraged the growth of Industry. By 1928 Industrial production finally reached pre-war levels. Growth in Industry began to slow down after 1927. 3 million new homes Were built. Farming suffered from depression throughout the 1920’s because of a fall in food prices. Unemployment remained a serious problem. The economy was not growing fast enough for Germany’s rising population.
