Students will explain the cause of WWII.

WWII- Pt 1 War in Europe

Problems in Europe Due to Great Depression, dictators were able to gain power in European nations Under Hitler, Germany began to remilitarize Violated the Treaty of Versailles Not supposed to have an army of more than 100,000 European countries (Britain and France) wanted to avoid war so they didn’t say anything League of Nations- useless because the US wasn’t involved, couldn’t stop Hitler Germany became more aggressive- why?

Appeasement Hitler annexed Austria, then the Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia (without asking) Alarmed other countries- European leaders met with Hitler They hoped Germany would be satisfied and stop taking land Allies used policy of appeasement Appeasement –giving in to the demands of a hostile party, in the hopes of preventing a larger conflict Called Munich Agreement- Germany *promises* to stop taking land, Europe lets him keep what he had already taken

Germany invades Poland- start of WWII WAR! Germany invades Poland- start of WWII 6 months later, Germany took the rest of Czechoslovakia- then wanted Poland England and France threatened war if Germany invaded Poland Germany signed non-aggression pact with Soviet Union Agreed that Germany and USSR would split Poland and Germany wouldn’t invade USSR Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939- WWII starts

Dictators take power- Hitler in Germany Great Depression Dictators take power- Hitler in Germany Germany rebuilds military, violates Treaty of Versailles Hitler annexes (takes) land Europe uses policy of appeasement Germany continues to be aggressive WWII starts

Start of the War Allies Britain France Soviet Union United States Axis England and France declared war on Germany in 1939 Axis Powers- Germany, Italy, Japan Allied Powers- England, France, USSR (Russia), Poland, and later the US Hitler’s forces used blitzkrieg (lightening war), to quickly take over land Allies Britain France Soviet Union United States Axis Germany Italy Japan

War in Europe By summer 1940, Germany had invaded: Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, and France Already had Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland B/c England is island, resisted invasion Winston Churchill became Prime Minister London bombed repeatedly; but survived “Battle of Britain” thanks to air power

Which of the following was an example of appeasement in WWII? U.S. Neutrality Acts of 1935 and 1937 The German conquest of Poland in 1939 The entry of the United States into WWII in 1941 The agreement of Britain and France to give Germany the Sudetenland in 1938
