Region Training Conference 2018 Public Speaking Region Training Conference 2018 Name, Position

Preparations Know your Audience - In preparing your speech, take note of what appeals to YOUR audience! Practice - You can practice with a partner, a mirror, or record yourself! Be aware of ways you can improve Fear - It’s OK to be nervous! But remember to be confident in yourself

Appearance Attire - Dress appropriately for your audience Confidence - Show good posture First Impressions - Greet the audience Smile! - It will keep you relaxed as well as make it seem like you aren’t nervous!

BEEhavior No ‘pee-pee’ dance - You may be nervous but once you start to dance you’re making others nervous Magnetic Wall - You are not attracted to the back wall, move around Watch the time - Don’t go over or under *Hand gestures - Can be good for expression, but may be distracting [triangle hands] Hand gestures: make an upside triangle with your hands, your thumbs being the base of the triangle, it keeps your hands from being ‘too expressive’

Engage the audience - Talk TO them, not AT them Eye contact - don’t have a staring contest, scan the audience and graze everyone’s eyes instead Interactive - bring up volunteers, ask audience questions, make it FUN World is your stage - utilize the space that you are given

Voice Project! - If the front row can’t hear you, then the back row is sleeping Vocal inflection - Monotone is a no-go; add livelihood into your voice to keep the audience engaged [Brown Bear] *Enunciate - Speak clearly so information is not misunderstood; don’t trail off [pencil trick, tongue twisters] Speed - Not too fast, not too slow Vocal Inflection: “The big, brown bear ran up the hill. The big brown bear ran down the hill.” Enunciate: pencil trick-speaking with a pencil between your teeth Tongue twisters: speak clearly and swiftly: “Unique New York” “Toy Boat” Speed: say a sentence really fast, say the same one really slow, demonstrate the importance of the speed

Confidence Speak with CONVICTION Say “Excuse me,” not “I’m sorry” If you sound reliable, people will trust you even if you know you messed up Say “Excuse me,” not “I’m sorry” It will make you seem more professional and more confident Invoke your true passion for the talk SMILE!

Content Repeating KEY points! - More likely to remember Professional language No fillers - ‘um,’ ‘err,’ ‘uh,’ ‘okay,’ ‘like’ Stutter - Practice! [James Earl Jones] James Earl Jones used to be a stutterer, not talking through most of his school days. Now a voice actor; voice of Mufasa from Lion King and said the famous “Luke, I am your father.”

Q & A Repeat back the question- For clarification Take your time- Gather your thoughts Be honest- Don’t know? It’s OKAY. Never say ‘I don’t know, next.’ Be respectful and helpful ‘I am not sure, however, I’ll get back to you.’

PRACTICE Stress that it is important to Practice Activity option -If time permits, have each person to an impromptu introduction of themselves for 30 seconds using skills they just learned
