Laboratory Safety & Laboratory Equipment

Appropriate Student Behavior Never Eat in the Laboratory No running No horseplay No unauthorized experimentation Never, under any circumstance, look directly into the sun It is not safe to eat anywhere in the laboratory There could be trace residues of poisonous chemicals that could cause you to become ill.

Proper Attire Electrical Outlets When working in the laboratory students should wear appropriate items for that lab - goggles, aprons, rubber gloves, etc. Do not wear baggy clothes, long necklaces, open-toed shoes, sweatshirts with drawstrings Tie back long hair. Electrical outlets near water sources must be GFI outlets GFI - ground fault interrupter – current is interrupted to prevent electrical shock. Always check for rips in electrical cords before the lab begins, report any frayed wires to the teacher (replaced or fixed by teacher) When removing a plug from the outlet, grab the plug not the cord.

Accidents Most accidents can be prevented if you make safety a habit. The best way to prevent an accident is to keep your work station clean Reading all parts and directions of a lab before beginning will prevent: mixing the wrong things together using the wrong equipment Never work alone If you get something in your eyes – wash eyes from the inside toward the outside. If you get acid on your hands, notify the teacher and quickly rinse for several minutes with water.

Science Classroom Requirements Two exits (windows don’t count) Fire extinguisher – point toward the base of fire Fire blanket Eye wash station

Laboratory Equipment Very Important Know lab equipment and its capabilities so you can carry out the lab in an organized fashion Gather all equipment prior to beginning the lab to minimize travel during the experiment

used to mix, store, or heat solutions or other liquids. Laboratory Equipment Beaker Holds larger amounts of substance – not used to make accurate measurements Erlenmeyer Flask used to mix, store, or heat solutions or other liquids.

Test Tubes, Test Tube Rack & Test Tube Holder Laboratory Equipment cm Metric Ruler Used to measure length units – m, cm, etc Test Tubes, Test Tube Rack & Test Tube Holder

used to measure liquid volume - in milliliters (mL) Laboratory Equipment Graduated Cylinder used to measure liquid volume - in milliliters (mL) cylinder guard Put on the top of the cylinder to prevent it from breaking if tipped over.

Laboratory Equipment Used to measure mass – in grams Add numbers from all three beams to get total mass. Triple Beam Balance Used to measure mass – in grams

Evacuation Procedures Fire Alarm – evacuate building based on classroom location Once outside, find your teacher immediately for check off Remain outside until informed by teacher to re-enter building Code Red Procedures Remain quiet and calm & listen to teacher instructions Remain quiet until teacher tells you otherwise. No cell phone use If caught in hallway – enter closest classroom or hide in bathroom…use good judgement

Tornado Procedure Stay with the class and proceed to the hallway where teacher directs you to go. Sit facing the wall - quietly so you can hear further instructions. In the event of a true storm, tuck your head between your knees and cover your head with your hands.
