Dream Girls Armani Arnold

Introduction of “The Dream Girls”. Detroit, the early 1960s. Curtis Taylor, Jr., a car salesman, breaks into the music business with big dreams. He signs a trio of young women, the Dreamettes, gets them a job backing an R&B performer, James "Thunder" Early, establishes his own record label and starts wheeling and dealing. When Early flames out, Curtis makes the Dreamettes into headliners as the Dreams, but not before demoting their hefty big-voiced lead singer, Effie White, and putting the softer-voiced looker, Deena Jones, in front. Soon after, he fires Effie, sends her into a life of proud poverty, and takes Deena and the Dreams to the top.

Background of “The Dream Girls”. It's the mid-1960s. Detroit-based The Dreamettes, a black girl singing group, is comprised of lead Effie White, and her backup singers Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson. They are struggling to make a name for themselves despite their talent. At a local talent competition, they are approached by Curtis Taylor Jr., a used car salesman who wants to break into the music business on the management side. He offers them a job singing backup for James "Thunder" Early, a renowned local black performer who has more of a reputation as a married man seducing his backup singers than his onstage actions, hence the reason he is having problems finding those backup singers. The girls reluctantly accept the offer, that reluctance based on Effie in particular not seeing themselves as backups to anyone else. In making a name for himself and the girls, Curtis brings along for the ride Effie's songwriting brother C.C., and in the process also takes over Jimmy's career. Despite embarking on a sexual relationship, Curtis and Effie, both strong personalities, begin to have diverging views of what it takes to make it in the business, Curtis who sees them needing to break what is racial barrier by sounding more mainstream or "white". The others have to decide what to do, and to who their loyalties lie as they try to make it to the top. Those views may change over time with the onset of the seventies and the change of mainstream musical tastes to disco, and as they see the view from the top in trying to stay there as opposed to looking at the top from the bottom.

Song #1: 1+1 - Beyonce Explanation: In this clip of the movie, the group, Curtis and even Effie own brother vowed to let Effie out of the group. This song connected to the movie when Effie was ejected from the singing group, Effie didn’t want to leave her relationship with Curtis. In the part of the song, “If I ain’t got nothing, I got you. If I ain’t got something I don’t give a damn. Cause i got it with you” establishes in the part how she oml wants Curtis and don’t care about everything else.

Song #2: Started From The Bottom- Drake Explanation: This song connects to the film from how Curtis started from a car salesman in Detroit to a manager to the famous girl group, “The Dreamettes” and Jimmy Earl’s new one. Also how Effie, Deeana and Lorrell went from Jimmy Earl’s back up singers to growing as famous singing group. After kicking Effie out of the Dreamettes, besides bringing the singing to the top, Curtis also expanded Deeana’s fan base and got her solo deals.

Song #3: Whatcha Say -Jason Derulo Explanation: In this scene Curtis booked both the Dream Girls and Jimmy to perform for an opening act. Jimmy and Lorrell had an altercation backstage when Jimmy couldn’t remember their anniversary and how he’s still been married since being with Lorrell. This songs show how Jimmy true colors and intentions are when his wife is in the crowd. He technically was still in love with his wife when being with Lorrell for 8 years.

Conclusion In conclusion, this film is based off a broadway musical where music set the theme of play and correspondence of the movie. This film is from Detroit, Michigan during the Motown boom of all latest artists. A car salesman finds fame in fortune in 3 singer singing group as they sang at a contest. The Dream Girls made it to the top facing a few obstacles. They were offered jobs as Jimmy Earl’s back up singers and branched off to their own fame as their famous singing group “The Dreamettes”.
