New Spain (cont.) Spain learned claiming land was not the same as controlling it. To protect its claims, Spain formed colonies to govern the people there. The colony of New Spain was formed in 1535.
Slavery in the Americas Some Europeans began settling in the Americas because they hoped to get rich. Others came to start large farms called plantations.

Slavery in the Americas (cont.) Bartolome de Las Casas spoke in favor of better treatment for Native Americans. As Native Americans died, Africans were captured and forced into slavery.
Settling the Borderlands Spain realized they needed to protect their northern borders, which included land from California to Florida.
Settling the Borderlands (cont.) The Spanish built presidios, or forts in the borderlands. St. Augustine was built in Florida. It was the first European settlement in what is now the U.S.
Settling the Borderlands Spain’s main goal in settling the borders was to protect its empire. The Spanish king chose leaders to govern each settlement. (not elected) The king also sent missionaries to convert Native Americans to Christianity.
Settling Borderlands Missionaries built religious settlements called missions in the southern half of North America. In 1610, Missionaries helped to establish Santa Fe in the New Mexico Colony.
Life in the Borderlands Some Native Americans chose to stay at missions and adopt a new way of living and working Spanish settlers built missions to convert Native Americans to Christianity. Some Native Americans were forced to work and fought back by tearing down churches and other buildings
Life in the Borderlands (cont.) Some Native Americans learned to tame horses and use them for hunting and war. Some Spanish settlers built large homes or haciendas where they had horses and raised cattle and sheep. Some Native Americans learned raise sheep and use their wool to make clothing.
