The Scientific Revolution Mr. C’s 7th Grade Social Studies

Main idea: Science & Technology Mid-1500’s scientists began to question traditional beliefs and develop new explanations based on experimentation.

Why it matters now... Questioning led to the modern scientific method... Who knows what the scientific method is?

Scientific Method A process to discover knowledge of the natural world. uses evidence, testing, reason, logic.. not tradition, or beliefs to answer questions

Terms and names Geocentric Theory Heliocentric Theory Scientific Revolution Scientific Method Galileo Galilei Isaac Newton

Setting the stage 1300 to 1600... time of great change Rebirth of learning and arts Scholars began to question old ideas, birth of modern science

Setting the stage Meanwhile Reformation questioned religious traditions & The Church Scientific revolution changed how people viewed the world.

Roots of Modern Science Medieval view: People thought the Earth was the center of the Universe: (Geocentric Theory) This was taught by the Church, Aristotle & Ptolemy...

A New way of Thinking Scholars began to challenge Geocentric Theory. Scientific Revolution: Based on observation, testing. This method challenged traditional views.

A Revolutionary Model of the Universe (Cosmos) Heliocentric Theory: The sun is the center of the Universe. Developed by Copernicus Today we know this is not true either.

Galielieo’s Disvoveries Telescope...discover ed moons of Jupiter/ dark spots on the Sun among other discoveries. Shattered aristotle’s theory that moon and stars made of pure perfect substance.

conflict with the church His Book in1632: “Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems” Contradicted with Biblical view Under threat of torture he recanted.

scientific method A logical method for discovering things about the natural world. Based on evidence, facts, testing How is this different than the old way?

Scientific Revolution Bacon & Decartes helped to develop scientific method. Both relied on logic, reason and evidence.

Famous quote “I think, therefore I am” Decartes The only reason we know we exists is because we can think.

Newton: Law of gravity Developed explanation why objects with mass attract each other. (Law of attraction) Explained by the Theory of Gravity Book: “Mathematical principles of Natural Philosophy.”

Scientific Revolution spreads Medicine and the Human Body Discoveries in Chemistry Modern science was born...

It all Boils Down to This: Scientific Revolution changed the way people think People questioned church Scientific method (Reason/logic)

?4U- Why do you think the development of the scientific method and increased literacy was a challenge to the church and old power structure in society?
