MD iMAP GIS Data Resources Jeyan Jebaraj, GISP Senior GIS Analyst Maryland Department of IT (DoIT) Geographic Information Office GIS Workshop| Towson, Maryland| Oct 21, 2016

What is MD iMAP? MD iMAP is Maryland's Enterprise GIS. This platform includes a robust and reliable core infrastructure, Access to GIS software and Delivery of authoritative data and services to support the GIS community.

GIS What is Geographic Information Systems (GIS)? GIS consists of hardware, software and data working together to display multiple layers of vector, raster, and data files simultaneously to understand and visually solve geographical problems and provide new insights into answering questions about the human and natural world we inhabit.

Types of GIS Data Three primary types of GIS Data Tabular Data Vector Data Raster Data

Types of GIS Data Tabular data

Types of GIS Data 2. Vector Data Points Lines Polygons

Types of GIS Data 3. Rastor Data An image made up of many pixels

Types of GIS Data All elements together This map contains Raster Vectors Vectors derived from Tabular data

GIS Data Formats Common Vector Data Formats The commonly used GIS data formats are Shape files (.shp) Geodatabases (.gdb) Keyhole Markup Language (KML) AutoCAD (DXF)

GIS Data Formats Common Raster Data Formats The commonly used GIS Raster data formats are Geo Tiff(.tiff) Digital raster graphic (.drg) Binary file (.bil) JPEG2000 (.jp2) MrSID (.sid)

MD iMAP Data Availability What is LIDAR? LIDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, is a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges (variable distances) to the Earth. These light pulses—combined with other data recorded by the airborne system — generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape of the Earth and its surface characteristics. Talk about LIDAR DEMs, Downloads.
