What is an EPIC? A long narrative poem that celebrates a hero’s deeds. Earliest epics survived for centuries as oral traditions before being written down. Most epics date back to preliterate periods. Based on historical fact = Education Performed by SCOPS or BARDS.

The Characteristics of an Epic 1. The hero, generally a male, is of noble birth or high position, and often of great historical or legendary importance.

Characteristics of an Epic 2. The hero’s character traits reflect important ideals of his society.

Characteristics of an Epic The hero performs courageous-sometimes even superhuman-deeds that reflect the values of the era.

Characteristics of an Epic 4. The actions of the hero often determine the fate of a nation or group of people.
