What is a Co-requisite Course? A course linked to a college-level credit course 0 units 1 unit 2 units 3 units Supplemental Support Supplemental Support Lecture Lab Activity Active Learning Skills Development

Purpose of a Co-requisite Course? To enable underprepared students to be successful in their college- level mathematics courses. Developmental materials is presented As a co-requisite with college-level coursework NOT a prerequisite to the college-level course Support the learning objectives of the credit-level course

Content of Co-requisite Courses Just in Time skills and knowledge necessary for college-level readiness Topics not needed for college-level course not included.

Pre-First Day Activities Learning Web – Post Syllabus MyMathLab – Copy the MyMathLab Model Course – edit dates & assignments Canvas – Copy Canvas Model Course – edit to include your course info, syllabus, etc. Identify co-requisite students Verify that all Math 0310 coreq students are enrolled in Math 1324 or Math 1342 Check the instructor name for each co-enrolled student Email each student a copy of the syllabus. Let them know about co- requisite courses.

Identification of Co-requisite Students 6/23/2018 Identification of Co-requisite Students “C” on the Attendance Roster indicates a co-requisite student – Handout Students should be co-enrolled in Math 0310 and either Math 1324 or Math 1342. Errors found before Day 1 should be reported to the Department Chair Errors found on Day 1 should be entered in the Drop/Add sheet

Procedure for Drop/Add (1st week) Instructor fills out student information on Drop/Add Form during the 1st week of class Turn the form into your Associate Chair Adds will be completed based upon availability. Students will be notified by email and must check their Student Account to ensure that any added class is paid for. No charge to students Do not guarantee any change to the student schedule. It is possible that a class may be full.

Early Alert On Peoplesoft Student System Use this early for students who are coming late, missing class, missing assignments, or have low scores. Use this system in the first five weeks of the semester

Positive Attitude Come in with confidence and positive attitude Use class time effectively Know you’ll be with students who are struggling with college-level math Be willing to discuss college-level problems during class time Follow the syllabus Communicate with other co-requisite instructors

How to succeed in a corequisite setting Developmental math provides support for college-level courses Do NOT teach topics out of order. The syllabus has been designed so that topics are taught in a just-in-time manner for college-level math If a student is struggling… Is the student a coreq student? Contact the other instructor Remind the student about tutoring and office hours If the student drops the Dev Math class, they also get dropped from college-level math

Focus Groups Developmental math and college-level math instructors will meet monthly during the fall to discuss the implementation of co-requisites at HCC. September 14th September 28th October 26th November 30th
