Methods 1 Types of data

Starter “How has your academic performance been evaluated over the years? Write a list of all the ways you can think of!”

Which form of data gives the most in depth understanding of your progress? Which gives you the most reliable information regarding your grades?

What is qualitative data? The collection and analysis of data that is quantifiable. What does this mean? For data to be quantifiable, the data must be able to be counted or mathematically calculated. Also, quantitative research provides a means for researchers to be able to generate statistics with the data that is collected. The general idea of quantitative research is get information that can be inferred (or generalized) to large populations of people.

What is quantitative data? The idea of qualitative research is to interview or observe a small group of people to be able to determine what that specific group is experiencing. However, the result of those interviews or observations would not be able to be generalized to a larger population such as across two states because the sample size was very small and intimate. While qualitative research serves the field of sociology nicely, it does not work well when wanting to generate statistics or work with larger populations of people.

THE COOKIE TEST Count the number of chips Measure the cookie Rate its taste 1-5 Rate its texture 1-5 Write a review in words of the cookies.

THE RESULTS Write up findings. Which questions produced quantitative data? Which produced qualitative data?

Quantitative data vs qualitative When would you require qualitative or quantitative data and why? The reasons why domestic abuse happens Number of boys failing to achieve 5 A*s to Cs in school Are academy schools working? Attitudes towards single parent families
