Jesus Grows in Stature

GROWING IN STATURE AND FAVOR Dale A. Matthews Teammates 1-27-2019

GROWING IN WISDOM, STATURE & FAVOR (Luke 2:52) “52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.”

GROWING IN WISDOM, STATURE & FAVOR (1 Sam 2:26) 26 And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with people.

INTERESTING PARALLELS BETWEEN SAMUEL AND JESUS Miraculous birth (1 Sam 1) Heard the voice of God at a young age in an age where the word of the Lord was rare (1 Sam 3) His name means “name of God’ or “heard by God” Nazirite from birth (1 Sam 1:11) Of the priestly tribe of Levi; led memorable Passover services (2 Chr 35:18) and is remembered for his prayers and character (Psalm 99:6; Jeremiah 15:1) Last (and greatest) of the 14 judges (Acts 13:20)

INTERESTING PARALLELS BETWEEN SAMUEL AND JESUS First of the prophets after Moses (Acts 3:24) Anoints Saul and David, the first two kings of Israel One of seven individuals whose name is repeated twice by God His spirit is brought back from the dead (1 Sam 28:3-25) Key quote: “Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams’” (1 Sam 15:22)

RENEWING OUR STRENGTH (Isaiah 40:28-31) “Do you not know?     Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God,     the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary,     and his understanding no one can fathom. 29 He gives strength to the weary     and increases the power of the weak. 30 Even youths grow tired and weary,     and young men stumble and fall; 31 but those who hope in the Lord     will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles;     they will run and not grow weary,     they will walk and not be faint.”

TABLE TALK How can Jesus the Son grow in wisdom, stature, and favor if God the Father is eternal and does not grow or change? Why do we grow up and why do we grow old? Will we grow in heaven?

SOPHIA ERYAN GOODMAN (b. 1-10-2017) 34 inches; 24 lbs 4 oz

LOUIS JAMES (“JAMES”) MATTHEWS, JR. (b. 5-23-2018) 27.5 inches, 19 lbs

THE GOSPEL IS GROWING (Colossians 1:6) “…(T)he gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it and truly understood God’s grace.”

GROWING IN GOD The Body of Christ “…(T)he whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.” (Col 2:19) “From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” (Eph 4:16)

YIELDING FRUIT (Psalm 1:3) “That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,     which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—     whatever they do prospers.”

GROW IN GRACE AND KNOWLEDGE “(G)row in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18) …(L)ive a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” (Col 1:10)

GROWING IN FAITH AND LOVE (2 Thess 1:3) “We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters,[a] and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.”

TABLE TALK In what specific areas of your life are you seeing growth? In what specific areas of your life are you not seeing growth? How might you help to bring about growth in yourself and in others?

DO NOT WORRY (Matthew 6:25-27) “…(D)o not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life (or cubit to his height)?”

IS IT GOOD TO BE TALL? The Nephilim (Gen 6:4) The Anakites (descendants of Nephilim; Num 13:26-33) The Amorites (Amos 2:9) An Egyptian fighter, 7.5 feet tall, killed by Benaiah (1 Chron 11:23) The Raphaite with 24 digits, killed by Jonathan (1 Chron 20:6-7) Goliath (1 Sam 17) Saul (1 Sam 9:2, 10:23)

DO NOT WORRY Matthew 6:28b-33 “See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

JANUARY 12 BIRTHDAYS Howard Stern (b. 1-12-54) Jeff Bezos (b. 1-12-64)
