Presentation transcript:

Rational Expressions and Equations Honors Algebra II with Trigonometry Ms. Lee

Essential Questions Essential Vocabulary What are rational expressions and how do you simplify them? How do you solve rational equations? Essential Vocabulary Rational Expression Rational Equation Compound Fraction Domain Common Denominator

Rational Expressions Rational expressions are fractions that have polynomials in the numerator and denominator What is the domain? When identifying domain, find what makes denominator equal to 0.

Rational Expressions Simplify rational expressions by factoring and canceling like factors. When multiplying rational expressions, you can cross cancel like factors. How do you divide fractions? Examples

Complex Fractions A complex fraction is a fraction that has fractions in its numerator and/or denominator. To simply a complex fraction we will multiply the entire fraction by the CD of the “baby fractions.” Examples from Page 339

Homework: Pages 331-332 # 6, 13-15, 17, 24, 30, 32, 34, 36, 43 Page 341 # 31-36

Rational Expressions How do you add or subtract fractions? Same process for adding and subtracting rational expressions Examples… be sure to identify the domain of the common denominator.

Homework: Page 340 #18-24 even, 26-30

Equations with Fractions How do we solve an equation with fractions? Multiply by common denominator. Same is true even if we have expressions in denominator. Solving Rationals vs. Adding/Subtracting Rationals Examples – Stewart (including work problems)

Homework: Pages 349-350 # 15, 17-25
