Requirements for Lab Participation Follow teacher instructions and rules. Stay in your group and talk only to the members of your group. Monitor the volume of your voice. Good classroom behavior. If you have 2 or more detentions or referrals you will not be permitted to participate in labs. A lab safety contract signed by the student and his/her parent or guardian must have been turned in to the instructor. A grade of 90 or above must be earned on a lab safety test. If you fail to make a 90 or above, you can take a retest during regular tutoring sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Everyone is responsible for cleaning up their work area. Lab Safety is Everyone’s Responsibility!

Wear appropriate safety equipment – goggles, aprons, gloves, etc. Long hair should be pulled back and free of hairspray. Closed toed shoes must be worn in the lab. Room should be well ventilated. Keep the work area clean, organized and uncluttered. Notify the teacher immediately of any accidents or unsafe conditions in the science classroom! Chemical Usage Chemicals include household products such as salt, baking soda, and vinegar. When using chemicals, only take the amount needed. Excess chemicals are not to be returned to their original container at any time.
Wafting The correct procedure for smelling a chemical is wafting (moving hand back and forth as if fanning).
Acids Always have on safety goggles whenever acids are present. When diluting acids, always pour the acid into the water, instead of the water into the acid. Never allow the acid to come into contact with your skin; however if it does, wash it with soap to neutralize the acid.

Safety Symbols Eye Protection Sharp Objects Electrical Safety Wear safety goggles when working with chemicals, flames, or heating devices. If a chemical gets in your eye, flush in water for 15 minutes and notify the teacher. Sharp Objects Walk with the points of knives and scissors facing down. Cut away from fingers and body. Electrical Safety Do not place a cord where someone can trip over it. Never use electricity around water. Unplug when finished.
Safety Symbols Animal Safety Heating Safety Only handle living organisms with teacher permission. Always treat living organisms humanely. Wash your hands after handling animals. Heating Safety Tie back hair and loose clothes when working with open flames. Never look into a container as you are heating it. Heated metal and glass looks cool, use tongs or gloves before handling. Never leave a heat source unattended.
Safety Symbols Chemical Safety Hand Safety Read all labels twice before removing a chemical from the container. Never touch or taste a chemical unless instructed by the teacher. Hand Safety If a chemical spills on your skin, notify the teacher and rinse with water for 15 minutes. Carry glassware carefully.
