Towards a RANCH Mentoring Program -2 (Sue Birch & David Perry) Community Development in Action Designing a Mentoring Program for New Coordinators

What should RANCH focus on in 2018/2019? Develop and implement a coordinator mentoring program Opportunities for working collaboratively on issues, projects, campaigns etc. relevant to RANCH houses   What should we do at RANCH meetings?

Today’s workshop? Why are we focussing on new coordinators? What will we need to do to design a mentoring program for our new coordinators? What will we need to do to establish a mentoring program for our new coordinators?

What is a mentoring program? Mentoring is most often defined as: “a professional relationship in which an experienced person (the mentor) assists another (the mentoree) in developing specific skills and knowledge that will enhance the less-experienced person’s professional and personal growth.”

What is the difference between “formal” and “informal mentoring”? Goals of the relationship are not specified Outcomes are not measured Access is limited and may be exclusive Mentors and mentorees self-select on the basis of personal chemistry Mentoring lasts a long time; sometimes a lifetime The organization benefits indirectly, as the focus is exclusively on the mentoree

What is the difference between “formal” and “informal mentoring”? Goals are established from the beginning by the organization and the employee mentoree Outcomes are measured Access is open to all who meet program criteria Mentors and mentorees are paired based on compatibility Training and support in mentoring is provided Organization and employee both benefit directly.

Participatory Action Research Process What do we need to do? What is happening now ? What would be preferable? How could we achieve this?

What will we need to do to design a Mentoring Program ? What do we want to achieve ? What type of program do we need ? How will we structure the program? What resources will we need?

What do we want to achieve? How will we define “new coordinator”? What do new coordinators need from a mentoring program?

What type of program do we need? What type of mentoring program would be more likely to meet the needs of new coordinators? One-on-One Mentoring Group Mentoring Short-Term or Goal-Oriented Mentoring

How will we structure the program? What will the program involve? How will the mentoring relationship work? How can the program be coordinated? How can we recruit and maintain mentors?

What resources will we need? What resources will be needed to implement, coordinate and support the program? How will these resources be provided? How can the program be sustainable?

How can we establish the New Coordinator Mentoring Program ? Design the program Develop resources to support the program Recruit participants Train participants Match participants Evaluate and review August September October November November July 2019

What additional issues should RANCH consider in relation to the establishment of a new coordinator mentoring program?
