Chapter 10 Starring The Mole

The Chemistry Mole Its like a bakers dozen. How many are in a dozen? How many are in a mole? 6.02 × 1023 Is that a big number? 602000000000000000000000 Yup it is How long would it take you to count that number if you count a number every second?

1907663630000000 years!!!!!! What do you think of that Hans? Why is this number so big? Because atoms are so small. You can have moles of compounds or atoms. How many atoms of oxygen are in 1 mole of water? How many atoms of hydrogen are in 1 mole of water?

Where did they get this number? A mathematician Avagadro figured it out That there were exactly 6.02 X 1023 atoms of carbon in 12g of carbon The atomic mass of an atom = the mass of 6.02 X 1023 atoms of it. Wow. What is the mass of one mole of water? 18.01528g How did I get that?

Formula Mass When you add up all the atomic masses in a compound you get the formula mass. What is the formula mass for Magnesium chloride? What is the formula mass for calcium hydroxide? What about rounding? Round to the hundreds place.

Write the formula masses for the following: Potassium Chloride Calcium Nitride Aluminum Bicarbonate Dinitrogen monofloride

The Math I Know you have all missed dimensional analysis right Hans. Since 1 mole = 6.02 X 1023 And 1 mole = the molecular mass We can convert between the three. Ex: How much doe 8.02 X 1033 atoms of aluminum weigh? How many atoms are in 55.21g of Calcium?

More Examples Right Hans How many moles are in 42.21g of Magnesium? How many moles are 12.11 X 1020 atoms of bromine? How many molecules are in 45.21 g of calcium floride? How much does 2.2 moles of aluminum hydroxide weigh?

Is That all there is Hans? No I was just asking a question. Gasses are different. And easier One mole of Any gas at 1 atmosphere and 0°C (Standard Temperature Pressure STP) 1mole = 22.4 L That’s easy. How many moles of hydrogen are in 43L How many atoms are in 86.1L of Fart.
