What Happened Long Ago? Year 1 History / Even Year

Lesson Overview Activity Lesson Learning Outcome Students will plan, prepare and conduct an interview with a member of the school community. Prior Knowledge Students need to draw on their prior knowledge of how to organise and conduct an interview which was the focus of the previous content lesson. Resources Required Teacher Dialogue Interview Special Instructions This lesson serves as a rehearsal for the following activity lesson where students will interview an Elder from the community. A member of the school community such as a teacher or teacher aide needs to be invited to the class to be interviewed by the students. Inform them that they will be asked a range of questions and that the interview will be recorded. It is important at this stage to confirm that the Elder from the community is able to be present for the following activity lesson. Possible Ancestral Language Connection (ALC) Links ALC staff should work with the students selected to greet, introduce and thank the visiting guest. Assist them to compose and practice what they need to say in a respectful manner and incorporate ancestral language wherever possible and appropriate. Vocabulary Activity Lesson

Activating Prior Knowledge Activity Outcome We will plan, prepare and conduct an interview with a member of our school community. Activating Prior Knowledge Tell your partner everything you can remember that needs to be organised to prepare for an interview. Why do we interview people? Have you seen an interview taking place before? Where?

Why conduct an interview? Concept Development Specific steps need to be taken in order to organise and conduct a good interview. An interview helps you to find out information that you may not have known. Sports people, people of interest, scientists, and musicians are just some examples of people who are often interviewed. An interview can be done face to face, on the phone or on a webcam. Why conduct an interview? Anyone can be interviewed. Anyone can conduct an interview. Aboriginal grinding stone 5

Concept Development Activity Lesson Specific steps need to be taken in order to organise and conduct a good interview. Provide a comfortable chair Provide a glass of water Greet the person at the door Introduce the person to the class Record the interview with a video camera. Check with the person first that this is ok. Ask the questions Thank the person for coming Show the person to the door Activity Lesson 6

Preparing questions for an interview Concept Development Specific steps need to be taken in order to organise and conduct a good interview. Write questions that begin with who, how, why, what, when or where. Choose the topic that you want to find out more information about. Check that all the questions are open ended so the person can include detail. Have all the questions written down ready for the interview. Preparing questions for an interview Practice reading the questions using a loud, clear voice. Aboriginal grinding stone Activity Lesson 7

Guided Practice Activity Lesson Specific steps need to be taken in order to organise and conduct a good interview. Refer to Teacher Dialogue Let’s follow these steps to organise and conduct a good interview. Step 1: Decide who will be responsible for each of the jobs on the checklist. Step 2: Work together to write a list of questions that the person will be asked. Example Questions: When did you first come to Hope Vale? What is your job here at this school? What do you like to do on weekends? How do you get to and from work? Where did you go to school? Activity Lesson 8

Guided Practice Activity Lesson Specific steps need to be taken in order to organise and conduct a good interview. Let’s follow these steps to organise and conduct a good interview. Step 3: Prepare the room for the interview and practice the greeting, introduction, questions and thank you. Step 4: Conduct the interview with the visitor. Activity Lesson 9

Relevance Specific steps need to be taken in order to organise and conduct a good interview. It is important to understand what an interview is and why people conduct them. Being well organised and preparing good questions will help to make sure that the best information can be shared during the interview. Interviewing people and finding out more about things that interest you may be something that you might like to do when you get older. People who do jobs that involve interviewing people, get to talk to many different and interesting people and learn about lots of new things. 10

Closure Specific steps need to be taken in order to organise and conduct a good interview. Our First Interview Do you think the interview was set up in a comfortable place? Was the person greeted at the door? Did the introduction work out well? Do you think the person understood all of the questions? Did we find out a lot of information about this person? Do you think we had the right number of questions? Did the recording go ok? Did we remember to thank the person and show him/her to the door? Is there anything we should do differently next time? 11
