Croydon as a test-bed for new innovative solutions Croydon Smart City Croydon as a test-bed for new innovative solutions Construction Site Monitoring /Air quality

Challenge & Aims The aim of the pilot is to mitigate impacts of construction traffic on Croydon’s roads, by looking at how construction vehicles especially HGVs use roads assets, as well as assessing damage, to help fix road condition problems.

Computer Vision Driven Solution The approach is to collect road image/ video data and using machine learning, analyse the road conditions and identify road issues (e.g. potholes), which feeds back into the Urban Data Platform. The challenge is to identify what may be an obvious problem to the human eye. Urban data sources such as Construction, Traffic, Roadworks and Air Quality are consumed to create a simple and intuitive map based interface, with filters to overlay data sources, providing visibility on what’s happening across the specified map area.

Pilot Progress Software and system development (Computer Vision). Data collection and analysis from Croydon fleets and other sources. Urban Data Platform Integration. Requirements and features definition and prioritisation complete Road status baseline complete Cameras installed on vehicles System learning from sample potholes images & camera feeds Integration to Urban Data Platform Urban Data Platform Integration Link the solution to Croydon’s Data Platform so as to create a reporting and alerting tool for council staff and contractors to act on identified problems early on. in the form of images collected from a mixed fleet of connected vehicles and other sources, and analyze to understand how construction vehicles use roads assets, and assess

What Next? Continue to develop and trial the solution. Looking for partners (Local Authorities, Fleet data, Commercial). Focus on outcomes. Looking for partners who have data and are interested to find out more to solve Looking for Partners to work with : Local Authorities, Fleets, Commercial.
