What events led to a civil war in the United States?

Anti-slavery Causes

Nat Turner Revolt Turner kills master and his family Other slaves join attacking other families Turner found guilt—hung, body skinned and given to whites as souvenirs

Uncle Tom’s Cabin 1852 Written by Harriet Beecher Stowe Anti-slavery novel Slavery is cruel and unjust Popular with Abolitionist in the North Hated by slave-owning states Turned the public against the Fugitive Slave Act

John Brown’s Raid of Harper’s Ferry 1859 John Brown An abolitionist from the north Broke into the arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia He wanted to arm the slaves, so they could revolt He was captured, found guilty, and hung

Laws and Court Case Causes

What might be some of the causes of their fight? Gina and Pam go to Murrow and don’t really get along, but they keep away from each other. One day, they get into a huge fight and the whole crew gets involved. What might be some of the causes of their fight? Pride (someone’s bothering you) Jealousy, competition Relationships (betrayal) He said/She said (rumors) Facebook, bullying Disagreements

Fugitive Slave Act 1850 Many slaves ran across the southern border into northern territory angered antislavery northerners the law made northerners feel as if they were part of the slave system convinced more northerners that slavery was immoral and evil

Missouri Compromise Missouri applied for admission as a slave state Maine requested statehood as free state Compromise 36 Parallel States north of it—free (slavery not allowed) States south of it—slavery was allowed

Kansas-Nebraska Act Popular sovereignty People who lived in Kansas and Nebraska territory made decision whether slavery was acceptable or not North was mad about this decision who believed in the Missouri Compromise South supported this Act Resulted in violence – “Bleeding Kansas”

Dred Scott Decision 1857 Dred Scott slave Scott’s owner moved him to Illinois, a free state, claims he is free Owner dies Slaves are property- 5th amendment states people can take property anywhere- *Property included Slaves* Slaves or descendents of slaves were not considered citizens Dred Scott had no legal rights

Causes of Civil War? The Laws Caused the War: Made people go against each other. The Kansas-Nebraska Act led to VIOLENCE. The laws are inconsistent – say one thing and do another. Ignoring the compromise of Missouri, like with the kansas-neb act. Dred Scott case – slaves are PROPERTY. The north was upset about this because they’re abolitionists. John Brown – gave slaves weapons. The North called him a HERO. South called him a terrorist. Uncle Tom’s Cabin was a book that showed inside of slavery (south said it was Propaganda).

Political Causes

Can Texas secede the Union? Right after the results of the 2012 presidential election had been revealed, something out of the ordinary began happening. United States citizens started filing petitions so that their states could secede from their country due to Barack Obama being re-elected as president. As of the evening of Friday, Nov. 16, 2012, the petition for Texas' secession has reached over 112,000 signatures.

Election Results 2012-Obama Wins! 1860- Lincoln Wins!

Election of 1860 Lincoln v. Douglass Lincoln wins the vote All different points of view about slavery Question on states obeying government laws Lincoln wins the vote Many states don’t trust that he will try to work things out southern states secede (break away) from the Union

Tariffs (Taxes) on Foreign Goods 1828 Northern factories were producing many of those same goods as Europe Northern politicians passed taxes on imported goods from Europe Southerners would have to buy goods from the North.
