Presentation transcript:

Chapter 1.4 Earth System Science Earth System Science = aims to understand Earth as a system made up of interacting parts called subsystems. Only Energy goes in & out. Energy AND matter flow in and out. Matter is trapped inside. CLOSED SYSTEM OPEN SYSTEM FlashDrive: Three types of systems.

Earth System is powered by 2 energy sources: SUN CORE Drives EXTERNAL processes like climate and weather, ocean circulation, and erosion. Drives INTERNAL processes like earthquakes, volcanoes and mountain building.

LIVING vs. NONLIVING FACTORS AFFECT EARTH Mudslide Sunlight Drought Orchard , Iowa tornado. 1913 Statewide flood in Ohio Locusts

RENEWABLE vs. NONRENEWABLE 2 million plastic bottles used every 5 minutes in USA. Coal Freshwater

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS Air pollution Research Project: using the internet find information about a major environmental problem. Provide an explanation (1 page) of the problem, a map of where the problem exists or how it is distributed, and one possible solution to the problem. Due in 1 week.
