SYB Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub Louise Berwick Programme Manager

What is the Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub? The hub forms part of the wider workforce hub for South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw, which also includes the Excellence Centre (SYREC) and the Faculty For Advanced Practice. Its main aim is to support the growth and development of a resilient primary care workforce. Built on the work done by the ATP What is the Primary Care Workforce & Training Hub? Our remit is fairly simple, to support the growth and development of a resilient primary care workforce. We are going to do this by building on the ATP work we have done across SYB over the last 8 years. For those of you not familiar with the ATP, it is a regional initiative that originally opened up undergraduate nursing placements in general practice and then developed additional offers and support around workforce. The circular drawing here does need updating, but HEE’s idea is that we work as part of the larger workforce hub across the ICS.

The hub has a team of clinicians and coordinators who can work with individual practices or ‘place’ teams. They can advise practice managers and clinicians about workforce initiatives available to them. They can also offer workforce planning advice and signpost the best available training and education. How does it work? We have a small team of clinicians and coordinators. Our clinical lead is Dr Alan Shirley who is a GP in Sheffield. We have 5 nurses and 3 coordinators. Who work part time. We do have a named coordinator for each patch – for Rotherham this is Jo Mirza – and they are available specifically to look at specifics at your place and can feed back into the hub as to what is needed.

We offer workforce initiatives through Health Education England North – to give practices a bit of help in identified areas of need. All of this is described in more detail with contact details on our website www.pcwth.co.uk

www.pcwth.co.uk Website We are working on the website and hoping it will become really useful. We have a blog on it from a newly qualified nurse which is really worth reading … We do need to let practices know that we are here and that we will do our best to support them in their thinking around workforce.

Who can access it? The hub covers all 5 'place' areas for South Yorkshire & Bassetlaw which form the Integrated Care System (ICS.) It is the point of contact for any primary care workforce queries and is available to all primary care organisations across the ICS. The hub covers and is open to all 5 place areas in SYB. It will be the point of contact for all primary care workforce queries.

Across SYB 227 nurses are due to retire by 2020. It is a sobering thought and we know it’s not just nurses. So we need to work together on this …
