INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION The Revolution that changed the world forever

Industrial revolution Industrial – Having to do with industry, business or manufacturing Revolution – a huge change or a change in the way things are done. Industrial Revolution – a change from making things by hand to making them in factories. The change from handmade goods to machine made goods. Another name of industrial revolution is machine age.

Child Labor

Transportation Before the Industrial Revolution, people relied on the horse and their own feet to get around. With the invention of the steam locomotive, transportation took a huge step forward. The first two major railroad companies were the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads.

The first steam locomotive was made by Richard Trevithick on the 21st of Feb 1804

Textile Industry With the invention of the spinning jenny and the power loom, the textile industry took off. Clothes could now be made far faster than ever before. In 1967, James Hargreaves

Telephone Alexander Graham Bell patented the first telephone in 1876.

Advantages of industrial Revolution People worked in large factories and towns More factories were built Factory workers followed set routines of work Huge amounts of goods were produced [ mass production]. Goods were sold in big cities and also exported.

Problems of industrial revolution More war and more exploitation More misunderstanding between more poverty

Reasons why it was successful in Britain People worked in factories were provided with food. Number of banks opened allowing people to borrow money to invest into industries. Roads were improved, so that industrial goods could be moved easily. Population grew rapidly providing plenty of workers for factories.

…and rejected capitalism in favor of socialism How did people respond to the changes & abuses of the Industrial Revolution? …and rejected capitalism in favor of socialism Socialists argued that the government should plan the economy by controlling factories, farms, railroads, mines, & important industries This would create equality & end poverty by redistributing wealth from rich capitalists to the poor workers 13

Karl Marx introduced a radical form of socialism called communism How did people respond to the changes & abuses of the Industrial Revolution? Karl Marx introduced a radical form of socialism called communism Marx & Friedrich Engels wrote The Communist Manifesto which predicted a war between the “haves” & “have nots” Marx encouraged workers to overthrow owners, seize control of factories, distribute goods evenly, & create economic equality for all people 14
