Microscope Notes

History: The invention of microscopes enabled people to see details of living things that they could not see with the unaided eye.

Anton van Leeuwenhoek Invented one of the first microscopes used in the late 1600s.

Robert Hooke Another inventor of the microscope in the 1700s. Was the first to observe and name cells.

Types of Microscopes: Light Microscopes Electron Microscopes Uses light and lenses to enlarge an image of an object. Uses magnetic fields to focus a beam of electrons through an object or onto an objects surface.

Safety: 1. Always carry a microscope with one hand on the arm and the other hand on the base. 2. A microscope should be stored with the low-power objective in place. 3. Always bring a specimen into focus using the low- power objective. 4. Never use the coarse adjustment to focus high-power objective. 5. Use only the fine adjustment when focusing with the high-power objective.
