1A2 Geography 16th March, 2015 Objectives: To review the uses of rock. To introduce students to a case study on quarrying – McMonagle Stone.

Homework for today’s class Where did you find examples of the uses of marble around Cobh?

Homework for Monday’s lesson For Monday’s class, you must: Find, and list, three reasons explaining why people might support the opening of a quarry in their town. Find, and list, three reasons explaining why people might oppose the opening of a quarry in their town. Our next class will explore the environmental impact of quarrying.

Our last lesson… Uses of rock… Energy and construction materials… Energy → Fossil fuels. How are these extracted form the crust? Construction materials. What rocks are commonly extracted for use in the construction industry? What are they used for?

Quarrying What is a quarry? A deep pit dug in the ground. Stone and other materials are extracted from quarries.

Quarrying What is quarrying? The extraction (removal) of rock, or other material, from a quarry.

Are there quarries in Co. Cork? Yes; numerous quarries can be found around the county. Some of these are sources of limestone and sandstone. Leamlara Quarry, Carrigtwohill, provides sand and gravel for use in construction.

Case Study: McMonagle Stone McMonagle Stone is one example of a business that exploits rock for use in the construction industry. McMonagle owns five quarries. Examples of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks are extracted by the company in a number of locations throughout Co. Donegal – rocks include granite, sandstone, and quartzite.

Case Study: McMonagle Stone McMonagle Stone is a source of jobs. The company has employed 90 people to work between its five quarries.

Case Study: McMonagle Stone McMonagle Stone’s main quarry is located in Glencolmcille, Co. Donegal. This quarry extracts gold quartzite (or brown quartzite). This rock is used in building and garden furniture.
