Blest are We Unit 2: “Baptism and Confirmation” Chapter 6: “Baptism and Confirmation”

We become children of God and members of the Body of Christ. At Confirmation we are strengthened with Holy Spirit. Baptism and Confirmation enable us to share in the priesthood and mission of Jesus Christ.

Baptism and Confirmation The Sacraments of Christian Initiation are Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. These Sacraments can only be received once because they place a permanent spiritual mark on a person’s soul. Older children and adults who are participating in the RCIA Program receive all three Sacraments at the Easter Vigil which is celebrated on Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. The Bishop is generally the minister of Confirmation unless special permission has been granted.

Faith Words Chrism – Chrism is perfumed oil that has been consecrated (blessed) by the Bishop. Sacrament of Confirmation – In the Sacrament of Confirmation, we receive a special outpouring of the Holy Spirit to strengthen us for carrying out Christ’s mission.

The Woman at the Well John 4: 4-42 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks the water from this well will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst. The water I shall give brings eternal life.” Jesus said to the woman, “I am the Messiah.” The woman ran to tell the townspeople that Jesus was the Messiah. From that day on, many of the Samaritans began to believe in Jesus because of the testimony of this woman.

Our Church Teaches Life the living water Jesus promised the woman at the well, the water of Baptism is a sign of new life in God’s grace. In Baptism, the action of putting on a white garment symbolizes putting on a new life with Christ. The lighted candle, which is lit from the Easter candle, symbolizes that Jesus, the Light of the World, will guide the newly baptized. Chrism, which is used in both Baptism and Confirmation, symbolizes the person’s responsibility to carry out Jesus’ mission in the world. The laying on of hands in Confirmation symbolizes that the person being confirmed is being strengthened with the Holy Spirit.

We Believe Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist are Sacraments of Christian Initiation. In Baptism, we are born to a new life in Christ. In Confirmation, we are strengthened with the Holy Spirit.

Dorothy Day: Sharing in Christ’s Mission Dorothy wanted to find ways to improve the lives of people who were poor. She, together with Peter Maurin, opened a hospitality house where people who were poor could stay and get food and clothing. Started her own newspaper, The Catholic Worker. The price of an issue of The Catholic Worker was and still is 1 cent. Dorothy and Peter started the Catholic Worker Movement, which opened hospitality houses across the United States. Dorothy truly lived out her Baptismal Commitment.
