MRSA(Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) By: Cassidy Hessman & Kierstyn Cunningham
What is MRSA? Type of staph infection Starts with a bacteria that lives mainly in the nose Occurs when there is an open wound in the skin If MRSA infects the skin, it can result in a wound infection, boil, or abscess If it infects the deeper layers of skin, it's known as cellulitis Usually just infects the epidermis
Signs Starts as swollen painful red bumps that look like pimples or spider bites The area might be warm Is full of pus or drainage May have a fever Will be lethargic
Causes The cause of MRSA is touching an infected person when you have a scrape or open wound Can be spread by cough or sneeze Poor hygiene 2 in 100 people carry the bacteria but don’t usually get sick Everyone carries the bacteria, but only few people get the disease Having other skin diseases, such as eczema, leads to a high risk of MRSA
Cure Most antibiotics will not treat MRSA, which makes it hard to treat If the antibiotics work, then it will just go away for the time being A lot of the time, you have to get it drained No known cure Eventually grow out of it
Worst Case Scenario Death Patients that have it for a year or longer are more likely to die If doctors can’t get it under control, patients will be hospitalized Once you have it a significant amount of times, the medicine will quit working The infection eventually eats your bone and goes through your body, leading to death
Facts Hospital patients are more likely to get the infection It can be mistaken for a spider bite MRSA is drug resistant form of a common bacteria Over 80,000 cases of MRSA a year and over 11,200 deaths a year
