How to Fill up a Balloon with CO2 Gas

Purpose To fill a Balloon with CO2 Gas

Materials Required Balloon Bottle Baking Soda Vinegar Towel (in case of leaks) Measuring Cup Funnel

Safety Concerns DO NOT pop the balloon Ensure that the balloon is well sealed over the bottle DO NOT drink the ingredients DO NOT breathe in the balloon once it is filled with CO2

Step 1 Gather all of your materials on a dry, flat surface.

Step 2 Blow up the balloon 2 to 3 times in order to stretch it out.

Step 3 Use a measuring device to measure out exactly 1/3 cup (79 ml) of baking soda.

Step 4 Using a funnel, insert the 1/3 cup of baking soda into the balloon.

Step 5 Using a measuring device, measure out exactly 1 cup (237 ml) of vinegar.

Step 6 Using a funnel, insert the 1 cup of vinegar into the balloon.

Step 7 Without spilling any of the ingredient, attach the opening of the balloon around the entrance to the bottle. Ensure that the seal is tight!

Step 8 Raise the balloon in a vertical direction so that the baking soda falls into the bottle and mixes with the vinegar. You may want to shake the bottle a bit to encourage the mixture.

Step 9 Once you hear a “fizzing” noise, you know that the reaction is happening. While the balloon expands, hold the seal tight so that it does not come off of the bottle.

Step 10 Once the reaction is complete, pinch the opening to the balloon so that the gas does not come out, and pull the balloon off of the bottle.

Step 11 Tie the balloon to ensure that the gas is contained inside of it and does not escape.

Step 12 Write the chemical CO2 on the balloon with a sharpe so that it is properly labelled and not mistaken for anything else.

Additional Ideas? Blow up a balloon the same size with regular air, and compare the 2 balloons to see if there are any noticeable differences. Weight? Feel? Temperature? Movement?

How to Write a Procedure

1. Write the Actions Write the Actions (steps) in order in which they happen. Start with the first action, and end with the last action.

2. Avoid too many Words Be Specific in order to communicate Clearly You could call this a type of “Summarizing”

3. Use the Active Voice Instead of, “The cake should be placed in the oven” You should say, “Place the cake in the oven”

4. Use Lists and/or Point Form Step 1: blah blah blah Step 2: blah blah blah Step 3 Step 4 Step 5 ………………..

5. Keep it Professional Don’t use “Slang” or “Jargon” Write in a professional manner Don’t say “you know?” “Wassup?” “Hey dude.” Etc.

6. Baby Steps! Make it INCREDIBLY simple and straight forward. Explain EVERY SINGLE step with clarity. Pretend like the person reading it has NO IDEA what they are doing.

How to Dig a Hole 1. Walk to the shed 2. Open the door and walk inside 3. Take a shovel 4. Walk to where you want to dig the hole 5. Push the shovel into the ground vertically as hard as you can 6. Lift the dirt out of the ground horizontally 7. Drop the dirt in a pile away from the hole 8. Repeat until deep enough

Your Task! Write a proper Procedure for a task using the criteria provided Present the Procedure to the class while performing it in front of us

Overview Your Procedure must: Be school appropriate Have a minimum of 8 steps Be something that you can do in the classroom

Step 1 Conduct some research and choose a procedure that you would like to do Fill out the “Rough Copy” Graphic organizer outlining your procedure and the required aspects that you must include

Step 2 Write your procedure as a “Good Copy” on Google Slides Your “Good Copy” must include everything that was on the “Rough Copy” You must include at least 1 appropriate visual image (picture) per slide

Step 3 Present your Google Slides presentation along with your procedure to the class The Google Slides presentation should correspond directly to the procedure that you are conducting

By the End of Today Choose which procedure you would like to do, and get started on the rough copy Let me know of your procedure before you start the rough copy Think of something that you know how to do well, or can learn in a short amount of time I will be happy to provide any materials that I can get my hands on, but you may have to purchase/bring some of your own

The Incredible Flexible Egg Experiment

Purpose To use the properties of “Scientific Equilibrium” to suck an egg into a flask while having it remain fully intact.

Required Materials Erlenmeyer Flask Hardboiled egg Water Match/ Lighter Paper

Safety Concerns Fire Hazard (Have Fire Extinguisher ready) Clear all loose paper and flammable material from area If fire becomes out of control, let match drop to concrete floor and burn out on its own Don’t inhale smoke Flash can become hot after experiment

Step 1 Hard boil a few eggs using boiling water Having a few spare eggs is good for this experiment I did this at home, so I condensed this step

Step 2 Assemble all of the materials on a flat, even surface.

Step 3 Crack the shell of the egg and take off all of the shell.

Step 4 Run some water on the egg to make it more slippery

Step 5 Tear off some paper and put it in the bottom of the Erlenmeyer Flask

Step 6 Tear off a small piece of paper and light it with a match/ lighter

Step 7 Once it catches fire, drop it into the Erlenmeyer flask

Step 8 Once the fire begins inside the flask, place the egg vertically on the opening to the flask If the fire did not start inside the flask, then wait a minute and try step 7 again

Step 9 The egg should begin to bounce on top of the flask, and eventually get sucked into the flask on its own

Step 10 Flip the flask over and shake it around to demonstrate that the egg is now stuck inside, and can only be removed if it is broken into smaller pieces

Additional Ideas? Do some research, and try and find if there is a Scientific way to remove the egg without destroying it
