Presentation transcript:

Do Now- Wednesday Please place your Tuesday HW on your desk  What are the 4 characteristics of living things? What is a cell?

Yellow Cards Yellow Card = warning Red Card = you are out of the game If you get a yellow card, you must quietly step outside and fill out this form. Come back in when Ms. Handa allows. We will discuss this form after class.

Characteristics of Living Things All living things grow and reproduce… All living things have cells… All living things respond to their environment… All living things receive energy…

Cell Types and Viruses

Today’s Objective Students will be able to describe the differences between prokaryotic cells, eukaryotic cells and viruses

Cell Theory 1. All organisms are made of cells. 2. All existing cells are produced from other living cells. 3. The cell is the most basic unit of life.

What are Cells?

Types of Cells All cells can be categorized as: a) Prokaryotic b) Eukaryotic These differ in their size, shape, and their complexity

Prokaryotic Cells Small and simple A cell that does NOT have a nucleus and no membrane-bound organelles Small and simple EXAMPLE: Bacteria

Example of prokaryote: bacteria

Prokaryotic Cell Structure Label! DNA Ribosomes Cytoplasm Cell membrane

Eukaryotic Cells A cell that does have a nucleus and membrane-bound organelles Larger than a prokaryotic cell Examples: animals, plants, fungi, protists

Examples of Eukaryotes: plants animals fungi

Eukaryotic Cell Structure Large! Lots of organelles!

How are they similar? Both prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have: A cell membrane Cytoplasm Genetic Information

Check for Understanding #1 A scientist looks in his microscope and sees a cell with a nucleus. He can’t remember what he learned in his Biology class. Help him out- What kind of cell is he looking at? A eukaryotic cell

CFU #2 Which of the following is a prokaryote? A bacteria B animal cell C fungi D human cell

Viruses Where do viruses fit in? …they DON’T! Viruses are not cells! Viruses are smaller and simpler than prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells They can NOT reproduce on their own, they require a host cell

Virus Structure Viruses basic structure is a nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) inside a protein coat

Virus Video

Example of Viruses HIV - leads to AIDS H1N1 (swine flu)

Most Complex  Most Simple Eukaryotic cell  prokaryotic cell  virus

The Big Difference Prokaryotes = NO NUCLEUS, NO MEMBRANE-BOUND ORGANELLES Eukaryotes = NUCLEUS, MANY MEMBRANE-BOUND ORGANELLES Virus = SMALL, NOT ALIVE, CANT REPRODUCE, NO ORGANELLES

Fill out the following table in your notes. . Size Complexity Cell Membrane (Y/N) Genetic Material (Y/N) Prokaryotic Cells Eukaryotic Cells Viruses

Exit Slip Eukaryotic cells are differentiated from prokaryotic cells because eukaryotic cells: A are much smaller B have permeable membranes C have a higher rate or reproduction D have nuclei

Exit Slip Eukaryotes, prokaryotes, and viruses are similar in that they all have: A mitochondria B cytoplasm C DNA D cell membranes
