Evidence Based Practices tools for improved mental health services Teri S. Brister, Ph.D., LPC NAMI Iowa State Conference November 16, 2018

What is EBP? Why is it important? Are any NAMI programs EBPs? What’s new at NAMI? Q&A

What is EBP? Clinical research shows that a treatment produces positive outcomes The treatment has been shown effective in repeated studies The studies have been published in peer-reviewed journals EBPs are treatments that have been shown through clinical research to produce positive outcomes, or good results. The treatment must be shown to be effectivein repeated studies EBP of mental and behavioral health care is an ongoing, collaborative approach to making decisions about services, which includes the following components EBP begins with consideration of the best available basic and applied empirical research evidence when making decisions EBP includes ongoing measurement and evaluation of the impact of services and if necessary outcome informed adjustments to services that are intended to maximize their effectiveness Providers serve as a guide for collaborative decision making in EBP practice – integrating different sources of information, including recipients values and preferences, as well as the providers competence and the organizations capacity to provide effective services

What kind of positive outcomes? Symptom reduction Prevention of need for intensive, more restrictive services Fewer hospital admissions Less expulsions from school Better quality of life

Examples of EBP therapies CBT – Cognitive Behavior Therapy CET – Cognitive Enhancement Therapy DBT – Dialectical Behavior Therapy EMDR – Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Multisystemic therapy

We have a right to know - There is more to psychotherapy than just “talking” There is more to using medication as a treatment component than just writing a prescription Not every healthcare professional has expertise in every type of therapy We need to know if the treatment being provided is legitimate Does it work? Does it work for my diagnosis? Does it work for people my age? My ethnicity? Are you qualified/certified to provide this type therapy? What experience have you had with it? REMEMBER: Mental illness is no one’s fault You can’t know what no one has told you Bio- psycho- social approach is necessary!

How do I know if a program is EBP? NREPP – National Registry of Evidence Based Programs and Practices – suspended spring 2018 Evidence Based Practices Resource Center https://www.samhsa.gov/ebp-resource-center
