The Spread of Enlightenment Ideas Ch 2 Sec 2

Challenging Society Because of censorship, philosophers had to disguise their writings as novels or fictional stories (like “Candide”).

Role of Women Women helped philosophers by opening up their homes for salons: meeting places to discuss new ideas.

Inspiring the Arts: New style of art called “rococo”: non-religious, elegant, light, and charming.

Inspiring the Arts Composers like Mozart, Haydn, Bach and Beethoven were inspired by the Enlightenment. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concerto 21 Andante

Enlightened Despots Absolute monarchs who embraced Enlightenment ideals and brought change to their countries. Frederick II of Prussia Joseph II of Austria Catherine the Great of Russia

How were the common people affected? Common people were not educated, so they were not affected- only the wealthy were exposed to these ideas. Slowly, common people would adopt these ideas, and by the late 1700s, they were ready for change.
