A-100 The opening in a blood vessel, where blood flows is called : Answer: Lumen

A-200 Question: Which layer of the wall of a blood vessel would be composed of layers of smooth muscle and elastic fibers? Answer: tunica media

A-300 QUESTION: Name the blood vessel layers from the outermost layer to the innermost layer. ANSWER: Tunica externa, tunica media, tunica intema

A-400 QUESTION: The layer in the wall of blood vessels that is made up of simple squamous epithelium ANSWER: tunica intima

A-500 QUESTION: How are veins different than arteries (at least 3 things)? ANSWER: Arteries have a smaller lumen and a thicker tunica media because there is more smooth muscle and an elastic lamina to help the arteries expand and recoil. Veins have a larger lumen and valves to prevent the backflow of blood. They also use skeletal muscles to pump blood.

B-100 QUESTION: In which type of blood vessel is blood pressure the highest? QUESTION: Arteries

B-200 QUESTION: This person was the first to discover that blood circulated through the body in a closed vessel system ANSWER: William Harvey

B-300 QUESTION: What causes varicose veins? ANSWER: Breakdown of the valves in the veins so blood pools

B-400 QUESTION: In a capillary bed, these vessels are where oxygen is exchanged with carbon dioxide. ANSWER: True Capillaries

B-500 GROUP HUG!!!! (Do you remember that from last year???) QUESTION: Describe why fluid from blood leaks out of a capillary at the arteriole end and much of this fluid is reabsorbed at the venule end. ANSWER: At the arteriole end the blood pressure on the inside of capillary is greater than the osmotic pressure on the outside of the capillary so fluid is forced out of the capillary through small gaps and fenstrations. At the venule end of the capillary the the osmotic pressure on the outside is greater than the blood pressure on the inside so fluid is forced back into the capillary.

C-100 QUESTION: What are the two most common pressure points used to check a person’s pulse? Answer: Radial and Carotid

C-200 QUESTION: Blood pressure taken when the ventricles are relaxed is called: ANSWER: Diastolic

C-300 QUESTION: What is it called when a blood vessel opens wider? ANSWER: vasodilation

C-400 QUESTION: The clinical name for high blood pressure is: ANSWER: Hypertension

C-500 QUESTION: When blood pressure is low the kidneys can release this hormone to bring it back up. ANSWER: Renin

D-100 QUESTION: This is a temporary organ developed when a women becomes pregnant so that the Exchange of oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide and wastes can occur between the baby and the mother. ANSWER: Placenta

D-200 QUESTION: This vessel carries oxygen and nutrients from the placenta to the fetus ANSWER: Umbilical Vein

D-300 QUESTION: In the fetus, this flap-like opening between the right atrium and left atrium keeps blood from entering the fetal lungs. ANSWER: Foramen Ovale

D-400 QUESTION: This vessel connects the pulmonary trunk to the aorta and acts as a secondary measure to keep blood out of the fetal lungs. ANSWER: Ductus Arteriosus

D-500 QUESTION: This special vessel causes blood to by-pass the fetus liver ANSWER: Ductus Venosus

E-100 QUESTION: This vein is located in the hip area ANSWER: Illiac vein

E-200 QUESTION: This vein is located in the armpit area. ANSWER: Axillary vein

E-300 QUESTION: This vein empties blood from the liver. ANSWER: Hepatic vein

E-400 QUESTION: This artery is in the forearm and would be on the outside with the thumb. ANSWER: Radial Artery

E-500 QUESTION: This artery carries blood to the kidneys ANSWER: Renal Artery

FINAL JEOPARDY Topic – Blood Pressure Question: List the 6 major steps in taking a person’s blood pressure. Be descriptive. Answer: 1) Place the blood pressure cuff around the person’s arm above the elbow (Biceps area) 2) Close the valve and pump up the cuff to about 180 mm hg of pressure so that the person’s blood flow is cut off. 3) Place the stethoscope on the brachial artery just above the elbow joint. 4) Slowly open the valve and let the air out while watching the needle. 5) Remember the number when you hear the first noise (systolic) and remember the number when the noise stops (diastolic). 6) Write the systolic over the diastolic
