P. G. & Research Dept. of zoology (AZ & BT) NME -PEST MANAGEMENT

Scope and Relevance of the Subject What is a pest? Pest is a destructive insect or other animal that attacks crops, food, livestock, etc Large scale damage to crops, food, and human life too if left uneradicated. Pest management, is one of the priority areas, in the industrial, agricultural, and health care sector. Experts in this field are highly valued professionals and get well paid !!!!

PEST CLASSIFICATION Pests Agricultural Household pests Paddy Cockroaches Sugarcane House flies Vegetables Mosquitoes Fruits Rodents Pests cause greater damage to food grains, crop damage, and fatal to human health. Major viral and bacterial disease are caused by these pests Ex:Dengue caused by Mosquito(Aedes) Leptospirosis caused by rodents

Agricultural Pests Paddy - Rice bug Wood Mason Kharif grasshopper Rice Gall Midge

Oilseed Pests Coconut : Rhinocerous beetle Redpalm Weevil Black headed caterpillar

Cash crop pests – Sugarcane Sugarcane leaf hopper Shoot Borer Top Borer Root Borer White Flies

Fruits -Mango Mango leaf hopper

Insect Pest- Cockroach, Mosquito Non Insect Pest – Rodent Insect pests Non Insect Pest – Rodent

Dengue and Leptospirosis

Various Pests Control Measures Control Measures are of the following types: Physical/mechanical (handpicking of pests, or by use of specific traps- Mouse , glue traps, Pheromone traps) Hand Picking Glue traps PheromoneTrap Mouse Traps

Chemical Measures: Use of different types of pesticide, insecticide, rodenticides, spraying of fumigants etc)) Insecticides Pesticides Rodenticide Fumigants

Biological:use of predators and parasites to control, the pest population Recent advancement includes IPM (Integrated Pest management ), IPM- found to be quite effective in pest control/ management

Pesticide Industry Pesticide industry huge money making business Number of natural, chemical pest control chemicals available in the market E.g. Malathion (Bayer) Endosulphan (ADAMA Chemicals) Indiscriminate use of pesticides, caused several diseases and also a major cause for environmental pollution. Solution for this Problem IPM!!!!!”

Learning outcomes of the course Identification and working knowledge about the different types of Pests Knowledge about all the latest pest control equipment and different pesticides, such as rodenticides(rats), insecticides(insects) available in the market Gain knowledge as to how, when, what and where to use these pesticides, and in safe dosages, so as to keep the pests under check or to totally eradicate them BECOME A PEST CONTROL EXPERT AND START A CONSULTANCY!!!
