To develop a method of comparing analogue and digital lifecycles Case Study Aim To develop a method of comparing analogue and digital lifecycles and then test the approach by applying it to analogue and digital lifecycles from British Library collections LIFE Project - BL Newspapers

The Burney Collection 1,100 volumes of the earliest known newspapers 1,000,000 pages Purchased in 1818 for £13,500 Digitised from the microfilm This is a common scenario for many Libraries and means that the long-term management of the surrogates takes on a more important aspect. Both of these surrogates have their own problems in terms of deterioration and risk and lend themselves to further analysis. LIFE Project - BL Newspapers

Legal Deposit Newspapers What’s compared Analogue Legal Deposit Newspapers Ongoing activity 133,000 issues a year Digital Burney Collection 3 year project 190,969 issues - Burney to Burney not a fair comparison Per-entity cost LIFE Project - BL Newspapers

Case Study Process Develop analogue and digital workflows Terminology issues How can we get a meaningful comparison? Future digitisation costs (Creation Stage) LIFE Project - BL Newspapers

Overview of Costs Cannot be taken as a straight comparison A number of similar stages around Aq, M and Ac Role of Creation cost needs to be looked at carefully Digitisation cost trend heading down Analogue collections now well set-up – smooth running of teams etc LIFE Project - BL Newspapers

Overview of Costs LIFE Stage C Aq In M BP CP Ac Total Digital £2.25 £1.20 £0.91 £0.24 £0.30 £0.10 £0.38 £5.48 Analogue £0.00 £1.18 £1.50 £0.27 £0.87 £0.34 £0.39 £4.56 LIFE Stage C Aq In M BP CP Ac Total Digital £0.00 £1.20 £0.91 £0.24 £0.30 £0.10 £0.38 £3.13 Analogue £1.18 £1.50 £0.27 £0.87 £0.34 £0.39 £4.56 LIFE Project - BL Newspapers

Overall Conclusions Comparison is complex but workable Retrospective costing adds complications Similar costs across a number of LIFE Stages Analogue lifecycles are well established compared to digital LIFE Project - BL Newspapers
