Principles of Design Part 2 Balance Contrast Emphasis Unity “Art is ruled uniquely by the imagination.” ~Benedetto Croce

Objective: Review: Identify the Principles of Design; Balance, Contrast, Emphasis, & Unity & explain how they affect works of art. Review: Principles of Design are guidelines to help artists create artworks. The principles describe the ways that artists use the elements of art in a work of art.

BALANCE Describe what you think it means to have visual balance.

Balance is the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space.

3 Types of Balance: Radial Symmetrical Asymmetrical Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh, 1889 Taj Majal, Agra, India completed in 1653

Elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side Elements on each of the sides are different but still look balanced

Radial= Circular Radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.

Contrast occurs when two elements in an artwork are different. Contrast is attractive to the eye, has focus and usually creates the center of interest.

Contrast can be thin and thick lines or a range of values from light to dark…

Contrast ….. can be things that wouldn’t be found in real life. Such as the elephants in this painting have thin legs.

Emphasis is when an element of an artwork is given dominance(main focus) by the artist and makes part of the work stand out to draw(movement) the viewer's eye there first. Emphasis is achieved by use of contrast. Contrasting elements create focal points to which one's attention cannot help but be drawn (eyes move to the focal point).

Unity is not a principle that can be applied individually to each element of art. It is more a general principle applying to the combined impact of all the elements. Unity is hard to describe in art terms but, when it's noticeable, your eye and brain are pleased to see the artwork.

YOUR TURN!

1.)THE ___________OF DESIGN ARE GUIDELINES TO HELP ARTISTS CREATE ARTWORKS.

2.)NAME TWO PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN THAT WERE DISCUSSED TODAY AND HOW THEY SUPPORT THE ELEMENTS OF ART.

3.)NAME THE THREE TYPES OF BALANCE AND HOW YOU WOULD DESCRIBE EACH ONE.

4.) DESCRIBE HOW THIS PAINTING USES THE PRINCIPLES OF ART DISCUSSED TODAY.

NAME ALL THE ELEMENTS OF ART 5.)BONUS** NAME ALL THE ELEMENTS OF ART AND PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN THAT ARE IN THIS PAINTING

TURN IN YOUR ANSWERS WHEN YOU ARE DONE.
