You are my chosen Apprentice. Your task is - Make our manufacturing into a smart 21st-century industry. We need ultra-modern materials for our cars, aeroplanes and consumer goods. Can you meet the challenge? What is matter? What are the states of matter? Thinking of the materials that we use now, what makes them useful? What materials could replace traditional steel, rubber and glass? Could new materials be cheaper? 1.1

Kinetic Theory of Matter Tells us about the differences between solids, liquids and gases at the tiny basic particle level. The theory explains why there are different states of matter. It tells us about how particles move and how they are arranged. Solid Gas Melting Boiling Liquid 1.2

Let’s go back to what we know about materials. What make a solid building stay solid? What makes a liquid fill up the bottom part of a bottle? What makes a gas, like a perfume odor, spread through the room? Explain these things by using glass marbles to model particles in matter. 1.2

I’m a businessman; I know only a little about Materials Science. As my Apprentice you must become an expert Materials Scientist to help me. What is the ‘fundamental stuff’ we need? What raw materials do we need to make new materials? How can we find clever solutions? 1.3

IMPORTANT information to remember for future study It is true: Atoms are the smallest particles of matter that can exist on their own. BUT It has been proved that atoms are actually made of even smaller particles. This is implied by this symbol of an atom (but it’s not a picture of one). These ‘sub-atomic particles’ are called Protons Neutrons Electrons And these particles are made of even smaller particles called quarks. Atomic science is interesting and complicated.

Atomic structure Atoms pack nearly all their mass into the nucleus. This is where all the protons and neutrons go. The electrons have a very small mass, but they move around the nucleus very fast and with a lot of energy. The electrons move so fast that they act like a shell right around the atom. 1.6
