Changes in Matter Ch. 1.3 Pages 22- 27 Brain Pop = States of Matter

Chemistry Chemistry is mostly about changes in _Matter__.

I. Physical Change A. A _physical__ change is any change that alters the ___form_ or _appearance__ of matter but does _NOT_ make any substance into a different substance. B. A _substance__ that undergoes a _physical__ change is still the _SAME__ substance after the change.

Physical Change C. Matter occurs in 3 states: _SOLIDS_ , __LIQUIDS__ and __GASES_. 1. A change in state from a __solid_ to a _liquid__ is a physical change. States of Matter Song = http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDZhUkp30tE&list=PLDFAAB53FAC40EF9D&index=1 (3:55)

Physical Change 2. _Dissolving_ is a physical change. 3 .Examples of physical changes: Bending, crushing, breaking, chopping, anything that changes the shape or form of matter

Physical Change

II. Chemical Changes A. A change in matter that produces 1 or more new substances is a _chemical_ change. 1. Hydrogen Peroxide on skin = _Water_ + _Oxygen_ gas 2. Iron Metal + Oxygen = _Iron_ _Oxide_ (also called Rust) Chemical Energy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZXySQ5xpt0 (2:44)

Chemical changes Heat Song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khZrs-UBq28 (1:35)

Chemical Changes B. Unlike a physical change, a _Chemical_ change produces _NEW_ substances with properties _different_ from the original substance. 1. What is combustion? Rapid combination of a fuel with Oxygen, produces Light, Heat and New Substances   Brain Pop = Heat

Chemical Change 2. What is oxidation? Slow combination of a substance with Oxygen

Chemical Change 3. What is tarnishing? Slow combination of a Metal with Sulfur producing a dark coating on the Metal

Chemical Change C. in 1770s Lavoisier showed that _NO_ mass was lost or gained during the _change_. D. The law of Conservation of Mass states that _Matter_ is NOT created nor _destroyed_ in any chemical or physical change. E. Sometimes called the Law of Conservation of Matter. (Mass measures Matter) 1. No mass is lost because during a chemical change, atoms are not lost or gained, only _rearrranged_. Brain Pop = Law of Conservation of Mass

III. Matter and Thermal Energy A. _Energy_ is the ability to do work or cause change. B. Every _chemical_ or _physical_ change in matter involves a _change_ in energy.

Energy C. _Temperature_ is a measure of the average energy of the random motion of particles of matter. D. _Thermal_ Energy = _TOTAL_ energy of all the particles in an object. Brain Pop = Temperature

Energy E. _Endothermic_ Change is a change in which energy is taken in. 1. Example of Endothermic Change: Melting Ice Changes in Matter

Energy F. _Exothermic_ Change releases energy. 1. Examples of Exothermic Change:  Combustion Warming your Hands by a Fire Chemical Reactions http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXmI67Co0mI (3:59)
