Daily Warm-up Wednesday, October 20th Why is ATP such a good energy donor, but not good for energy storage? HW: -Read 8.2 Turn in: -Lab notebook -Daily warm-up (last chance)

Photosynthesis Light- visible is a spectrum Pigments: light-absorbing molecules Help plants to capture light What is main pigment in plants? Plants would not grow well under green light

Why do we see a change in color in the leaves? Green color usually overwhelms other pigments. When temperatures drop in the fall, chlorophyll breaks down and allows other pigments to show through.

Location of Photosynthesis Chloroplast Thylakoid Stroma

Energy Transfer Sunlight excites electrons in chlorophyll Electron carriers NADP+ Holds electrons and an H- NADPH

Photosynthesis Need to know reactants and products

2 Stages of Photosynthesis Light-dependent reaction Takes place in thylakoids Requires water as electron donor Oxygen is released as a byproduct Light-independent reaction Sugars produced Takes place in stroma (fluid within chloroplast)

Light-Dependent Reactions Needs sunlight Produces water Makes ATP and NADPH Occurs in the thylakoids Photosystems Photosystem is cluster of proteins and chlorophyll

Light-Independent aka Calvin Cycle Uses ATP and NADPH from light-dependent stage to make sugars. CO2 is used here to make sugar. ADP and NADP+ go back to the light-dependent stage after they have donated energy
