NEW TOPIC: Extreme Climates

What is an extreme climate? L.O. To define and map extreme climates To look at the characteristic of cold environments

Key Words Latitude = How far north or south a place is. Places with high latitude are in the North and South Poles. Altitude = How high or low a place is. E.g. a mountain has high altitude. Weather = ? Climate = ?

WHAT IS AN EXTREME CLIMATE? In pairs discuss and come up with a definition. Who would live there? What plants are there?

Extreme Climates pg 118 The most important extreme climates are… Copy table down.

Cold Environments Cold environments are areas covered in ice for all or nearly all of the year. They are found in areas of high latitude and high altitude. Examples include Greenland in the North, Antarctica in the South and the Himalayas in central Asia.

Cold Environments Arctic Antarctica Permafrost Mountain On your map mark on the areas shown. Extension – Using an atlas find out which countries these cold areas are in.

True or false Cold environments are found in places with high latitude. Permafrost is ground partly frozen all year. Places in the centre of continents are colder. Antarctica is found in the North Pole. There is land under the south pole but not the north. In the poles there are weeks when the sun doesn’t rise. There is nothing important in cold environments. People don’t live in cold environments. People first moved to the South Pole 40,000 years ago. Burning fossil fuels is causing the world to get colder. Greater use of resources in cold environments is threatening the wildlife there. Extension Two things I have learned about cold environments are… Read sheets. Copy down sentence and say if it is true or false.
