What is Digital Literacy in the Adult ESL World? Adult Education Spring Institute February 17, 2017 Brookland Conference Center Columbia, SC

Take 1 minute to write down what you think. What is Digital Literacy? How does it relate to Adult Education and Adult ESL? Take 1 minute to write down what you think.

What it IS…. So…what does that mean? Digital literacy is the ability to use information and communication technologies to find, evaluate, create, and communicate information, requiring both cognitive and technical skills So…what does that mean? What it IS….

There are many digital literacy tasks that easily accompany English language lessons and units, including: writing email messages or sending text messages, listening to related podcasts, reading the news online, creating short presentations, writing blog posts, creating digital stories, …and many more. What it IS….

Google Forms is one free online survey tool that is easy to use. Used in combination with the online book “Amir Gets Sick” https://esl-literacy.com/readers/phaseI/developing/amir_gets_sick.pdf What it IS….

What it IS… …find, evaluate and communicate information Used in combination with the online book “A Trip to the Dentist” https://esl-literacy.com/readers/phase3/adequate/a_trip_to_the_dentist.pdf What it IS…

There are many benefits to integrating digital tasks alongside related lessons.  It uses the same vocabulary and grammar as well as topic, so that only the digital format is new, making for a straight- forward learning situation.   The same type of activity is done multiple times it allows for the development of both task and technology expertise by the teacher and the students as well as the opportunity to work through and get past the inevitable glitches. These tasks can be done with computers, smartphones, or other digital devices.  If devices are limited, students can work in small groups sharing one device. What it IS….

What it IS NOT… In Isolation: Using point and click websites for online learning (CareerReady 101, ITTS, Rosetta Stone) Learning to type Knowing the parts of a computer What it IS NOT…
