Part I -Matching 1. William B. Hartsfield 2. Ivan Allen, Jr. A. This attempt to integrate was considered a failure because it tried to do too much, but also formed future integration attempts B. This Georgian began as a peanut farmer, became a state senator, then Governor, and is the only person from Georgia to be elected President of the United States C. This group was led by a lawyer who was tasked with finding out how Georgia citizens felt about school integration D. This Atlanta Mayor brought air travel to Atlanta, expanded the city, and encouraged peaceful integration in the city E. This Atlanta Mayor was the first African American elected as Mayor of a major southern city; he also expanded the airport F. This group was formed by ministers/preachers and they organized protests, marches, and peaceful resistance to segregation G. This person was one of the first black students at UGA; they graduated with a degree in journalism H. This event drew 250,000 spectators, and helped to get the Civil Rights Act of 1964 passed I. As a college student, this person helped to organize other students to engage in peaceful sit-ins, protests, and marches; later in life he became a US Representative J. This Mayor of Atlanta continued to support peaceful integration of the city; he also sought to unite Georgians through sports teams K. This person not only integrated the University of Georgia, but they also integrated Emory University becoming an Orthopedic Surgeon L. This group was formed by college students; they participated in non-violent protests, sit-ins, marches, and freedom rides M. This person started their career as a preacher and became involved in the Civil Rights Movement; He later became the first black US Representative from Georgia since Reconstruction. He also served as an ambassador to the United Nations, Mayor of Atlanta, and 1996 Olympic organizer N. This person shut down his restaurant in response to the Civil Rights Act of 1964. After being elected Governor, he softened his attitude towards African Americans and hired many blacks to serve in government jobs O. This person started their career as a preacher and became involved in the Civil Rights Movement; He was looked to as the leader of the movement, and due to his actions during the 1950s-1960s he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
