Letter Naming Resources: Here is an example of what your child might see on their test: Kindergarten students have 1 minute to name as many letters on the page we show them as possible. Some are capitals, some are lowercase. Want to print your own? http://overthebigmoon.com/full-alphabet-letter-identification-printables/

Nonsense Words Wondering why your child needs to know this? Click here! What are nonsense words? Nonsense words are pretend words that follow a ‘rule’. For example: sug / this is not a real word, but if they understand the sound that u makes (short vowel sound) they will get the word correct. Again, they have one minute to read as many words as they can. Who is tested in Cabarrus County? Kindergarten students (Mid-year and end of the year) First Grade Students (Beginning of the year, Middle of the year, end of the year) Second Grade Students (Only if they are still struggling on this skill) Want to print your own resource at home? Click here! put some of your own non-sense words. You can use a blank game board to Google nonsense words to get ideas!

How can you support practice at home? D.I. PApers How can you support practice at home? When your child brings home a paper, ask them what they practiced at school. Ask them to point to each sound (they don’t call them letters) and show what they learned. Although it may not make sense to you, it makes sense to the children and you will notice MANY papers will come home focusing on the same sound. They will do this until mastery. They SHOULD NOT write the letters as they are shown on the papers. These are printed differently to differiantiate the sounds they make (short and long vowels, and letter combinations)
