TYPES OF INFORMATION SOURCES An information source is a person, thing, or place from which information comes, arises, or is obtained. Information sources can be known as primary or secondary. That source might then inform a person about something or provide knowledge about it. Information sources are divided into separate distinct categories, primary, secondary, tertiary, and so on

INFORMATION SOURCES Library/internet- The Internet has become a big library for all kinds of information. Some information sources are available online free of charge while others are fee-based. Examples include online books, databases, journals and reference resources.

PEOPLE-Inform a person about something or provide knowledge about it. TELEVISION-Present information in different formats, Can include facts and opinions, Can be an up to date source of information

CD’S-When a compact disc is played, the information is read by a laser and converted into sound that represents an original audio source. RADIO-is a key information source for the most time-sensitive local news and information topics. ... This makes radio the fourth most popular source for breaking news

NEWSPAPERS-is to give news, but this news is not just news about the day’s happenings. Newspapers bring us a selection of the news from around the world. There are local news items, ‘unexpected news’ of accidents, robberies etc. There is news from the parliament which provides information with regard to decisions affecting the country. News from the world comes through reporters for local newspapers stations abroad or through news agencies in different countries.

BLOG-regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style. WIKI-a website or database developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content.

Sources That are used to source others Yearbooks-an annual publication giving current information and listing events or aspects of the previous year, especially in a particular field. Dictionary Atlases Handbooks Bibliographies-a list of the books referred to in a scholarly work, typically printed as an appendix Directories

ADVANTAGES OF INFORMATION SOURCES BOOKS - Thorough treatment of a topic. -Portable. -Quality checked by publisher -Usually well-researched -Include references to other sources you can use -Dip in and out as needed ENCYCLOPEDIA- Good source of background information. -Gives facts about a topic -Quality checked -Brief overview of a topic NEWSPAPERS-Good source of current even -Cheap. -Up to date coverage of events, news and opinion -Include images -Can include reliable information as well as some facts and figures

VIDEOS- Covers a wide variety of topics. -clear concept clarity, as everything can be visualized and explained in detail. -Visuals tend to be more interesting and engaging, when compared to text. -It helps retain and maintain interest for longer periods of time. -It provides an innovative and effective means for educators to address and deliver the required content. REASEARCH DATABASE-Many topics: Article written by authorities: -May be pear -portable if on a laptop -Many people can access the same database at the same time.

DISADVANTAGES OF INFORMATION SOURCES BOOKS-May not contain the latest information. -Time consuming to locate the information needed. -Take a long time to be published ENCYCLOPEDIA-Information is usually not very specific. -Printed copies may go out of date -May not include a lot of detail NEWSPAPERS-Information may be biased or mislead. RESEARCH DATABASE-Access restricted to authorized users user name and password required.

VIDEOS-More difficult to mark a useful passage than printed media. -The video could be a distraction if the structure of the video is not aligned to what needs to be taught. -It is hard and time consuming to find quality videos.
