Year 3 Term 3 & 4 Themes SCIENCE AND ICT HUMANITIES PE AND PSHE (History, Geography, RE) PE AND PSHE Forces and Magnets We are going to work scientifically through: Notiing that some forces need contact between 2 objects, but magnetic forces can act at a distance Observing how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others Comparing and grouping together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet, and identifying some magnetic materials Describing magnets as having 2 poles and  predicting whether 2 magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on which poles are facing Computing We are going to keep practising our keyboard skills and: Write a simple program Understand run/stop Understand what a Sprite is Use loops Use if statements History We are going to: understand when in world and British History the Ancient Egyptian periods were; understand how our knowledge about the past comes from different sources and; research and organise information R.E. Our key question is: Why do some people think that life is a journey and what significant experiences mark this? P.E Swimming Dance – Egyptian themed composition – We wukk be exploring and improvising ideas based on different styles, working on our own, with a partner and in a group; creating and linking dance phrases P.S.H.E - Jigsaw Unit 3 Dreams and Goals We will be working together on: staying motivated when facing challenges; working well in a group; having a positive attitude; working hard to achieve our goals and dreams and: helping others to achieve their goals and dreams You could: Find out about the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb Talk about how you mark or celebrate special moments in your/your family’s life You could: Make a magnetic maze (https://learning-resources.sciencemuseum.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Magnetic-Maze.pdf) Investigate Scratch online (https://scratch.mit.edu/) You could: Watch and practise this dance with friends (search traditional Egyptian dance by children on Youtube-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lJ9Kd0EIew) Ask other people in your family what their dreams and goals are. We are going to: Count up and down in tenths Find a fraction of a set of objects and a fraction of a shape or number Find equivalent fractions Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator Compare and order fractions Solve problems that involve finding, ordering or comparing fractions Measure, compare, add and subtract: lengths (m/cm/mm); mass (kg/g); volume/capacity (l/ml) Measure the perimeter of simple 2-D shapes Tell and write the time from an analogue clock, including using Roman numerals from I to XII, and 12-hour and 24-hour clocks Estimate and read time with increasing accuracy to the nearest minute; record and compare time in terms of seconds, minutes and hours; use vocabulary such as o’clock, am/pm, morning, afternoon, noon and midnight Know the number of seconds in a minute and the number of days in each month, year and leap year Compare durations of events [for example, to calculate the time taken by particular events or tasks] CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT (Art, Music, Design technology) Art We will be writing in hieroglyphics and making canopic jars in clay Music We will be exploring pentatonic scales Design technology We will be researching, designing and making different types of pyramids You could: Draw the death mask of Tutankhamun https://artprojectsforkids.org/how-to-draw-king-tut/) or make a scarab beetle Make a pyramid out of Lego You could: Read a book by Philip Pullman; I was a Rat is appropriate for most Year 3 readers. Find out what a quest then research some famous quest stories; lots of our favourite books are quests. Via a search engine (type in Topmarks fractions games) play Fraction Matcher: https://phet.colorado.edu/sims/html/fraction-matcher/latest/fraction-matcher_en.html .
